Come join our Drinking Water team and be an integral role in ensuring the safety and integrity of Alberta’s drinking water supply!

The Drinking Water Operations Specialist (DWOS) position utilizes their specialized technical expertise and experience to support drinking water systems located across northern Alberta.  This exciting and rewarding work is carried out within the framework of provincial legislation, policy and the current business plan. Building a collaborative environment you will work closely with system owners and operators, regional compliance and approval staff to meet the desired outcome of safe drinking water for all Albertans. Applying your strong systems thinking your responsibilities include assisting drinking water treatment plant operators and owners with continuous improvement of potable water quality, educate waterworks personnel and owners on the full spectrum of source to tap drinking water protection and work with Regional Health Authorities to mitigate situations where public health may be threatened. Willing to face challenges, you often work independently, employing your sound judgment and decision-making skills to overcome obstacles to achieve successful outcomes.
 

As the DWOS, you will:

  • Identify drinking water treatment process enhancement opportunities for surface water, groundwater under direct influence (GUDI) and groundwater to pursue continuous improvement and performance measurement
  • Ensuring quality assurance and control by researching, sampling, testing, tracking and analyzing data while making recommendations for enhancements in drinking water treatment operations
  • Utilizing your strong attention to detail and concise communication, you will prepare reports, recommendations and briefing materials for management and/or external stakeholders to be used for decision making

You will also provide public health risk assessments, risk mitigation strategies and emergency preparedness recommendations to ensure that changes are delivered in accordance with departmental, government and industry objectives. You will interact with all waterworks systems in a set geographic boundary where extensive fieldwork is required.  
 

To be successful in the position, you will be required to understand drinking water technical terms and analyze concepts in order to have the ability and agility to deliver timely service to Albertans. Strong interpersonal, verbal, written and visual communication skills are key to this role, including a proven ability to develop networks and communicate complex and technical drinking water treatment concepts in a clear and understandable manner to a variety of audiences including senior executives. Strong research and analytical skills as well as the ability to provide innovative ideas, problem solving and manage projects is essential.

Qualifications

Required: 

  • University graduation in Chemical or Civil or Environmental Engineering (with courses in water treatment process and design) supplemented with a minimum of five years related experience in drinking water industry is required.
  • Candidates must be eligible for membership with APEGA. Active membership preferred.
  • Candidates must have a valid class 5 driver’s license. 


Assets: 

  • Directly related experience with drinking water treatment processes and regional transmission systems is preferred. 
  • Experience with the application of the Water Act and the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, associated regulations and codes of practice, and Provincial and Federal standards and guidelines would be considered assets. 



Candidates with lesser experience will be considered at a lower classification and salary level.

Salary

$3,044.75 to $4,215.69 bi-weekly ($79,467.97 – $110,029.50/ year).

In this role, you will primarily be working in an office setting. However, you may be required to conduct field visits when necessary and to attend meetings within and outside the Region.
