We offer a

PROFESSORSHIP for
„Waste Management and Material Cycles“
Salary-Gr. W2

The earliest appointment is possible from 1st October, 2023 on.

Your responsibilities

We are looking for a scientifically internationally recognized personality  to represent the field of “waste management and material cycles” in environmental and civil engineering at the TU Braunschweig. The appointed candidate will become the Head of the Division of Waste and Resource management in the Leichtweiß-Institute for Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources (LWI).

The professorship represents an important component of the research activities at TU Braunschweig in the fields of environmental/water/resource protection, sustainability in civil/environmental engineering and the supply and waste management. The professorship will deal with fundamental and applied research in the fields of waste management and material cycles. This includes fundamental research into the interactions between solid waste from urban and agricultural sources as well as special waste, such as resulting from dredged material, building material production and demolition/remediation of buildings and soils. Questions regarding the treatment of landfills in a changing climate as well as the circularity of substances are also in the focus of the professorship.

To sharpen the profile, specific research content is desirable, e.g.:

  • Storage, treatment, and reuse of contaminated dredged material from riverine, estuarine and seaports
  • Detection, sorting, removal of macro- and microplastics in water and soil in the built and natural environment
  • Rheological, mechanical, and reactive processes in aging landfill sites that are endangered by geomorphological/climate change processes
  • Increasing the value of material flows in environmental and civil engineering through separation, further processing and energetic use

Our expectations

In teaching, we expect the candidate to fully cover the field of waste management and material cycles within the civil, environmental, traffic, and industrial and civil engineering Bachelor and Master degree programmes. An engagement in the interdisciplinary modules of the degree courses in environmental sciences is expected.

The willingness to work in an interdisciplinary manner with other departments of the faculty such as building materials technology, geotechnics, urban water management, hydrology, hydraulic engineering and coastal engineering, sanitary engineering and water management, as well as mathematical-numerically oriented basic subjects such as mechanics, statics and dynamics is expected. In addition, active participation in the development of the research priorities at TU Braunschweig such as “City of the Future” is desired. Participation in academic self-administration is mandatory.

The successful candidate has a proven record of experience in research or applied waste management and material cycles. Scientific and professional excellence should be proven by an excellent publication performance as well as successful acquisition of funding and / or responsible implementation of research projects. The university didactic ability should be proven by appropriate further education or positive evaluation of courses by students. Further criteria are subject-specific commitment (e.g. committee work), leadership skills and other extra-curricular or interdisciplinary (personal, social and methodical) competencies.
