Job Description

We are currently looking for a talented and motivated Graduate Hydrogeologist to join our hydrogeology team as part of the Water Environment Department within Sweco’s Environment. Water and Energy division.

You will join a growing team of hydrogeologists, hydrologists, flood risk and sustainable drainage experts, hydraulic modellers, geomorphologists, civil engineers, and water quality specialists who provide consultancy advice, design and modelling services for public and private water supply, development and infrastructure at all stages of the planning and design process.

Our Graduate Engineers form an important component of our design teams and have a varied, interesting workload, with a mixture of office-based design work as well as some work on site.  Previous graduates relished the real responsibility they were given from the outset.  On the job training and support is provided by senior personnel and the company offers approved training agreements numerous professional institutions.  This is an excellent opportunity for an individual to become part of a growing team and benefit from good career development prospects.

What does the role involve?     

Working within a team environment you will be assisting with the provision of a multi-disciplinary consultancy service for Sweco’s clients working on the delivery of groundwater resources projects, from aquifer development, management and protection for public and private water supply to EIA and construction support for major infrastructure schemes and local developments.

Examples of projects that our groundwater team are working on at present include long-term pesticides, nitrates, saline intrusion and water resources investigations under water company Water Industry National Environment Programmes (WINEP). We are also supporting major highways schemes, water companies and private developers on schemes across the country from the preliminary design and EIA stage through to construction, via the design and implementation of groundwater monitoring and testing programmes, groundwater flooding studies and dewatering assessment and permitting.

You will be expected to:

  • Work in a supervised environment on site and in the office ensuring that the technical content of work is acceptable and prepared in agreed timescales.
  • Report to the appropriate team leader on technical issues associated with project work.
  • Be capable of working on your own initiative, with appropriate supervision.
  • Work in close collaboration with other team members in other disciplines.
  • Understand and comply with the Company Integrated Management Systems (IMS) and take cognisance of current Health & Safety legislation.

To be successful in this role you’ll possess:

  • A MSc or PhD in Hydrogeology or other related discipline.
  • Membership of a relevant professional institution with the aspiration to achieve Chartered status.
  • The ability to communicate in a fluent and positive manner with other team members and to produce reports and other documents in clear English.
  • Good working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite.
  • An understanding of water resources hydrogeology, engineering hydrogeology and environmental impact assessment, including relevant UK legislation.
  • Experience in the use of standard hydrogeological modelling and monitoring equipment software, and ArcGIS would be advantageous. 
  • The ability to work on your own initiative and to seek assistance when required.
  • The ability to organise and prioritise your workload to ensure that timescales are met.
  • Good problem solving/contingency planning skills with ability to find quick, innovative and practical solutions.
  • The ability to work collaboratively with others to form strong positive working relationships with both colleagues and clients.
