Researcher on Earth Observation for Land Degradation

The CMCC Foundation is a scientific research center on climate change and its interactions with the environment, the society, the world of business and policy makers.

Our work aims to stimulate sustainable growth, protect the environment and develop strategies for the adaptation and mitigation of climate change.

Our Division on Impacts on Agriculture, Forests and Ecosystem Services (IAFES) is looking for a new position of Research Scientist, responsible for the use and combination of in-situ, Earth Observation (EO) and other geospatial data to assess land (vegetation, soil, water) status and temporal changes, with the main purpose of further feeding empirical, physical and/or machine learning approaches for studying land systems and their degradation dynamics, with a focus on droughts. We are looking for an established researcher making a positive contribution to the development of knowledge, research and development through co-operations and collaborations, skilled in identifying scientific problems and opportunities, as well as research methodologies and approaches, within her/his area of expertise. The activities will also foresee coordination of research teams, conceiving of/collaboration on peer-reviewed publications as well as communication of findings through reporting and participation in conferences.

The job location is CMCC office in Viterbo with possibility of agreeing on remote working.

We are looking for a motivated person with the following requirements:

PhD Degree on Forestry, Agricultural, Environmental, Hydrology or Earth Observation Sciences;
Good knowledge of state-of-the-art and novel EO products, and of their potential for land monitoring;
Good knowledge of (geo)statistics and of geospatial/remote sensing data processing methodologies, software and tools, including GIS;
Experience on the elaboration, comparison and combination of in-situ and EO data and derived products/indices for studying processes related to status and changes in land cover, vegetation, soil and water properties, including validation against Land Surface and/or Dynamical Vegetation Models;
Skills on information technology-based tools and common programming languages (e.g. R, Python, Matlab) and/or script-based tools (CDO, NCO) to manage, process and combine huge amount of data;
Track-record of scientific publications in high-impact peer-review journals;
Experience in international/EU projects as P.I. or research group coordinator;
Very good knowledge of English language, Italian is an asset;
Good communication skills and teamworking attitude.
Belonging to legally protected categories (ex L. 68/99) will constitute a preferential condition.

Some fiscal benefit could be applied for repatriated workers or foreign researches/professors, having the requirements defined by Dlgs 147/2015 (for repatriates) or Dl 78/2010 (for foreigners).

We offer the opportunity to join our team through a temporary contract of n°12 months starting from June 2023, with the possibility of contract extension based on performance, results achieved and new project opportunities.

Annual salary ranging is from 40k-45k Euros, depending on qualification and experience.
