Research Assistant – Peatland Hydrology & Chemistry

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full time, fixed-term position as a Research Assistant in Peatland Hydrology and Chemistry with Earth & Ocean Sciences at the University of Galway.

This position is funded by Science Foundation Ireland and is available from March 2023 to May 2025 (27-months).

Job Description:

The successful candidate will be working as part of a tri-partite team based in the University of Galway, Queens’ University Belfast and Ohio State University.

Duties:

The successful candidate will be part of a team of researchers working on stream flow from undisturbed peatland, and will:

  • Actively participate as a member of the team and assist a Post-Doctoral Researcher in completing the research work;
  • Provide assistance in conducting the research activities, including planning, organizing, conducting, and communicating research studies within the overall scope of the research project ‘SAPHIRE’;
  • Coordinate and perform a variety of independent tasks and team activities involved in the collection, analysis, documentation and some interpretation of information/results; and,
  • Present information on research progress and outcomes to the research team (making use of standard research techniques and methods, and methods devised as part of this work).

Qualifications/Skills required:

Essential Requirements:

  • BSc in any Geoscience discipline, including Geology, Earth Science, Environmental Science or related disciplines
  • Completion of hydrology/hydrogeology modules or appropriate field experience
  • Experience with field work
  • Full, current driver’s licence

Desirable Requirements:

  • Postgraduate qualification in Hydrogeology/Hydrology
  • Experience in water sample recovery
  • Experience with chemical analysis
  • Good communication skills and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team with scientists, engineers and technicians.   

Employment permit restrictions apply for this category of post

Salary: €28,701 per annum (RA1/1)

Start date: Position is available immediately.
