Introduction

DNREC works to keep our waters clean and plentiful. It studies and finds ways to manage water as a functional part of the landscape, looking at individual watersheds and drainage areas.

Summary Statement

These two positions reside in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control Division of Water.  One position is housed in the Commercial and Government Services Section which serves a diverse, state-wide customer base of commercial, industrial, and municipal permittees, and the other position is housed in the Resource Protection Section which provides inspection, compliance, and enforcement support services for the Division of Water.  Both positions assist in protecting Delaware’s water resources with a focus on industrial stormwater pollution prevention, as well as, through technical support for state-wide stormwater, drinking water, and wastewater permitting and compliance programs.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class.   • Conducts field studies or inspections and evaluations for compliance with permit and regulatory requirements; observes, collects, analyzes, reviews and interprets data from standard field studies, compliance inspections, various regulatory submissions or literature and makes recommendations.
     
  • Performs statistical analysis of data.
     
  • Conducts technical reviews and makes recommendations on permit applications or other various regulatory submissions to ensure compliance with regulations.
     
  • Prepares permits, technical reports and/or enforcement case documents.
     
  • Responds to technical/regulatory inquiries from other state, local and federal agencies as well as public and private organizations or individuals.

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Environmental Scientist II
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Possession of a Bachelors degree or higher in Life, Physical, or Applied Science or related field.
  2. Six months experience in analyzing and evaluating scientific data.
  3. Six months experience in interpreting laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures.
  4. Six months experience in using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.
  5. Six months experience in technical report writing. 

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Environmental Scientist III 
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Possession of a Bachelors degree or higher in Life, Physical, or Applied Science or related field.
  2. Six months experience in environmental or natural resources project management which includes planning, developing, implementing, managing and evaluating environmental or natural resources projects to ensure objectives are met.
  3. Three years experience in analyzing and evaluating scientific data.
  4. Three years experience in interpreting environmental laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
  5. Six months experience in using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.
  6. Six months experience in technical report writing.
