Job description

It’s an exciting time to be involved in planning England’s water resources. Last year’s drought is fresh in people’s minds, and our water supply is under continuing pressure. Water companies and regional water resource groups have consulted on their draft water resource management plans and regional plans, and we are waiting to hear how they respond to the responses they have received. In this post you will be in the middle of this!

The role will involve working closely with experts in the team and in Operational Catchments Services to provide technical guidance to water companies and advise Defra on water companies’ plans. The post holder will also work closely with other regulators such as Ofwat, Natural England, RAPID and Natural Resources Wales.

Your job will help ensure water companies provide a secure supply of water to people and businesses, while protecting the environment.

The team

You will be part of the water company planning team which leads on producing guidance on water company plans, managing our review of plans and our advice to Defra. In particular our team leads on water company drought plans and water resources management plans.

This role is in the water company planning team, which is a part of the Security of Supply. The Security of Supply team sets the direction for water resources planning.

Experience/skills required

We are looking for someone with good inter-personal skills, who can help manage a significant programme of work, but also react flexibly to changing priorities. A good understanding of water resources is beneficial, but not essential for this role as there will be a chance to learn and develop. We would be very interested in hearing from you if you have some or all the following experience:
• a self-starter with the ability to work independently in a dispersed team
• ability to manage and deliver projects and programmes
• technical experience of reviewing and/or providing advice on drought planning and/or water resources management plans
• technical experience of water resources such as licensing, hydrology, groundwater, environmental regulation, or sustainable abstraction
• experience organising and working within a process to deliver EA responsibilities on statutory planning or similar
• building, maintaining, and maximising relationships with internal and external customers
