Job Summary/Basic Function:

Boise State University seeks to hire a Research Assistant or Research Associate
Hydrogeologist to work with the Idaho Department of Water Resources (IDWR) in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. This position will provide long-term hydrogeological and project management support related to a variety of water projects, programs, and initiatives including the Statewide Water Level Monitoring Program. The position will be filled at the Research Associate or Research Assistant level depending on education and experience.

Essential Functions:

The person will assist with various tasks related to the operations and analysis of the IDWR Statewide Water Level Monitoring Program including, but not limited to:

  • Drilling oversight for the construction of new monitoring wells.
  • Conducting groundwater level, lake level, and stream flow measurements in IDWR networks.
  • Collecting water quality samples from wells and surface water sources.
  • Processing, entering, and analyzing monitoring data utilizing IDWR applications and databases.
  • Coordinating with local water users to access sites and understand regional water issues.
  • Installing data loggers to record continuous groundwater levels in selected wells and downloading electronic data from data loggers as necessary.
  • Collect geological samples and GPS coordinates of sampling and measuring locations.
  • Performing data QA/QC checks and helping to maintain data standards and database design.
  • Analyzing data sets to determine various metrics and trends, and to address questions and concerns regarding local and regional water resources.
  • Responding to inquiries for data and information from a broad spectrum of individuals and entities.
  • Developing hydrologic reports and presentations. Present findings to local stakeholder groups.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of scientific principles, research design, and protocols, including analysis and collection of samples.
  • Ability to work independently on projects and as a contributing member of a team.
  • Ability to perform field or office work, as applicable to the position.
  • Ability to develop working relationships with research partners, vendors, and stakeholders.
  • Ability to spend up to 50% of the work week in the field, year-round, with some overnight stays.
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and walk over uneven terrain.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to problem solve and trouble-shoot equipment or measurement issues that occur while in the field.

Minimum Qualifications:
Research Assistant:

Requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree or Associate’s Degree with at least two years relevant professional experience.

Research Associate:

Requires a minimum of a Master’s or equivalent degree in a relevant discipline, or Bachelor’s or equivalent degree, plus at least 2 years of post-Bachelor’s work experience in a role that is similar to that of a Research Assistant.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • B.S. or M.S Degree in hydrologic sciences or related physical sciences.
  • Experience coordinating with local water users to access sites and to understand regional water issues.
  • Experience installing data loggers to record continuous groundwater levels in selected wells and downloading electronic data from data loggers as necessary.
  • Experience performing data QA/QC checks and helping to maintain data standards.
  • Experience analyzing data sets to determine various metrics and trends, and to address questions and concerns regarding local and regional water resources.
  • Experience with responding to inquiries for data and information from a broad spectrum of individuals and entities. 
  • Experience using regional and local hydrogeology to inform work.
  • Familiarity with ESRI ArcGIS products.
  • Familiarity with topographic and geological maps.
  • Experience using a hand-held GPS unit.
  • Experience working with the public. 

Salary and Benefits:

This position is salaried with a target annual salary for a Research Associate of $52,000-$55,000, or a Research Assistant of $42,500-$45,000.
