Scottish Water have an exciting opportunity within the Water Maintenance Planning Networks Team a for a self-motivated enthusiastic Strategic Planner.

As a Strategic Planner within the team, your role is to lead the maturing of our management approaches focussed on interruptions to water supply, poor pressure, and discolouration. In a safe learning environment, you will apply techniques to understand why customers are experiencing poor service, before making recommendations on how best to improve service and then initiating actions to resolve.

As a member of the Networks Team, you will work with a team of technical experts who will develop and enhance your understanding of water distribution. You will have the opportunity to develop your technical skillset which offers you a good foundation for progression within Scottish Water.

The key focus for this role will be to mature the Improve Pressure Management Approach, along with being the teams key contact for Water Risk Assessment Platform (WRAP), Risk Triage Tool needs, Non-Complex Service Delivery (NCSD) needs and Unifier promotions.

Key Activities and Accountabilities

  • Mature the Improve (Poor/Low) Pressure Management Approach moving this from a largely reactive approach to one that planned & preventative.
  • Lead on Water Risk Assessment Platform (WRAP), Risk Triage Tool needs, Non-Complex Service Delivery (NCSD) needs and Unifier promotions for the team.
  • Undertake root cause assessments to help form a view of why service has deteriorated, liaising with the teams that can supply vital information to assist this. 
  • Recommend and initiate further investigations that will improve the understanding of why service has deteriorated, such as pressure logging, modelling studies etc.
  • Recommend and initiate actions that will aim to reduce the risk of future service issues, such as water mains replacement, pressure enhancement schemes etc.
  • Monitor completed actions to ensure that they have been successful in improving service.
  • Monitor progress and investment as part of a monthly reporting cycle
  • To support research initiatives working with universities and industry organisations (e.g. WRc).

Key Strengths and Capabilities

  • Good understanding of water hydraulics, flow & pressure
  • Good knowledge of water supply systems hierarchy from treatment works to customers taps.
  • Good analytical skills with a basic understanding of water network performance measures, such as interruptions to water supply, poor pressure and discolouration.
  • Ability to interrogate spatial systems to understand network connectivity.
  • Excellent data management skills with good experience in the use of Microsoft applications (Word, Outlook, Excel, Power BI).
  • Good problem solving and communication skills
  • Ability to think logically and interpret complex information
  • Ability to present information to suit audience
  • An effective organiser capable of working with minimal supervision where required.

Desirable Skills & Knowledge

  • Working knowledge of Unifier – cost, risk and contract management and project workflow approvals
  • Working knowledge of Dynamics, LIMS and GIS
  • Design, build and create experience of business reporting systems and tools including Power BI, SharePoint etc

In accordance with Scottish Water’s Hybrid Working policy, it is anticipated that a large part of the role can be carried out from the location that suits you best, including from your home, but some travel will be required to Scottish Water offices and sites throughout Scotland.

The salary band for this role is £35,384 – £47,924 per annum.
