Your new role, what’s involved?

WSP has an opportunity for a Graduate Hydrologist or Water Resource Engineer to join our UK and Ireland Mine Water team on a full-time, permanent basis in one of our offices in London, Birmingham or Naas (Ireland). 


Our UK and Ireland Mine Water team is formed of surface water, groundwater and geochemistry professionals with experience ranging from graduate level to 30 plus years of experience. This presents an opportunity to work on projects internationally and learn from experienced colleagues at different stages of their career and with different areas of technical expertise. We contribute to all parts of the mining life cycle, from exploration and pre-feasibility through to mine closure.


The role will focus on working within the team on a range of projects predominantly within the mining business, although there is also the potential to work with other local sectors including infrastructure, manufacturing and land development.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Input to or completion of water resources aspects of a range of mining projects (with senior review and direction), including environmental assessments, environmental permitting, and engineering design projects by:


• Preparing input to complete technical documents including descriptions of investigations, results, conclusions and recommendations for review by senior staff;


• Providing support to UK and Ireland based non-mining projects, including Flood Risk Assessments (FRA) and Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS) design for land development projects;


• Project-based travel and site work, working away from home both in the UK, Ireland and internationally. The frequency and duration of this will depend on business and client need;


• Supporting the development and maintenance of client relationships, either through project-based client interaction or through supporting business development efforts of senior staff;


• Working in a collaborative manner with colleagues from other disciplines within WSP as required;


• Work in a collaborative way, taking direction from and supporting more senior staff to achieve project goals and meet deadlines; and


• Display a ‘safety first’ attitude in line with an interdependent health and safety culture, promoting positive health and safety, raising safety issues through the appropriate channels and adhering to WSP’s health and safety policy and procedures.

We’d love to hear from you if you have:

  • You’ll be graduating in 2023 or you may have recently graduated with at least a 2:2 in a BSc degree (or equivalent) in Water Resource Engineering or Civil Engineering (with hydrology and hydraulics modules), or BSc in Geography or Environmental Sciences (with hydrology module) plus MSc course in engineering hydraulics;
  • You’ll be looking to start work in April 2023, September 2023 or April 2024
  • You’ll ideally have less than 1.5 years relevant experience
  • You’ll be passionate with the curiosity and creativity to solve problems
  • You’ll want to stretch and inspire us, speaking up about any new ideas you have
  • You’ll want to throw yourself in from day one and put your studies into practice
  • You’ll have excellent communication skills
  • You’ll enjoy working in a team environment, sharing ideas and collaborating with colleagues 
  • You’ll have confidence to work under pressure with the ability to prioritise and plan effectively
