Role

We are seeking an Aquatic Scientist who will be responsible for 4 key results related to environmental monitoring and research on chemical, physical and biological characteristics of lentic systems delivered by the Resource Stewardship Division (RSD) and the Watershed Sciences Section (WSS) of the Air and Watershed Stewardship (AWS) Branch: Design, Planning, Delivery, Evaluation and Reporting.

In this position you will: 
 

  • Design: lead the review, development and continuous improvement of lentic (lake and reservoir) research and long-term water quality and quantity monitoring programs that address major issues of concern in Alberta. 
  • Plan: lead and participate in multi-year and cross-discipline research and monitoring program planning driven by scientific questions to assess the condition of Alberta’s lentic ecosystems. 
  • Deliver: ensure long-term lentic monitoring and research programs are delivered in a safe and effective manner. 
  • Evaluate and Report: Develop, lead and actively participate in the analyses and completion of scientifically credible environmental data evaluation and reporting that meet project plan commitments and legislated reporting requirements. The end results are Condition of the Environment and other reporting products and research papers in peer-reviewed publications.
     

You will provide leadership and mentorship to junior scientists and work collaboratively with other Alberta Environment and Protected Areas (AEPA) Watershed Scientists (including groundwater, lotic, wetland and geospatial experts) in the combined modernization of AEPA lentic monitoring and research programs.

Qualifications

Requirements: 

  • Ph.D. in a scientific discipline relevant to lentic ecosystems including more than one of the following areas of limnology: water and/or sediment chemistry, hydrology, thermodynamics, aquatic ecology, paleolimnology, statistics, biogeochemistry, and watershed management.
  • 5 years post-doctoral or equivalent work experience in the design and implementation of surface water research and monitoring programs. 
  • Experience in leading multidisciplinary scientific teams and working with partners in academia, industry, and government and non-government agencies.
  • Advanced knowledge and skills in the statistical analyses of large water quality data sets using common software such as R.
  • Demonstrated record of primary and collaboratively authored publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals commensurate with established peers of similar experience (for example, Assistant Professors at Canadian academic institutions).
     

Equivalency: 

  • Masters Degree, plus 7 years related leadership experience; 
  • University graduation in a related field, plus 9 years related leadership experience.
     

Assets: 

  • Familiarity with AEPA’s surface water monitoring and research programs.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to develop and deliver presentations to senior managers, key stakeholders, the scientific community and public audiences 
  • Ability to build and maintain effective and productive working relationships, including with Indigenous communities, various internal and external researchers, post-secondary institution’s graduate students, researchers, and specialized scientists.

 
Candidates with lesser qualifications may be considered at a lower classification and salary.

Salary

$3,507.06 to $4,655.27 biweekly ($91,534 – $121,502/year)

Hours of Work: 36.25 hours of work, Monday to Friday.
