Could you use your knowledge and skills to ensure we properly manage water resources in England?

Do you have good problem solving and communication skills and enjoy working collaboratively with colleagues across different teams to protect the environment?

This is a fixed term role until 31st March 2024.

Water is becoming increasingly important due to the combined pressures of climate change and population growth. In this role you’ll help shape water resources regulation and enable its delivery across the Environment Agency by:
• providing advice on regulatory matters and how we meet environmental obligations through regulation
• producing and updating technical guidance
• developing and providing training
• collaborating with different parts of the organisation to improve water resources regulation
• working with, and influencing our customers and partners, including organisations representing abstractor interests from the public water supply, agriculture, industrial and power generating sectors

We’re a small, friendly, geographically dispersed team and promote a positive, inclusive, and supportive culture where everyone feels valued.

We work closely with government, national stakeholders, Environment and Business (E&B) Directorate, and operational teams. We develop and implement plans to deliver legislation and provide technical advice and guidance.

We use smart tools to stay connected and reduce travel, but some travel and overnight stays may be required.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You’ll have the option to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training will be available to support you with your incident role should you choose to have one.

The team

You’ll join our Water Resources Regulation team. We set the strategic direction for water resources regulation on abstraction and impounding. We’re based in the E&B Directorate.

E&B supports the Environment Agency by using evidence, expertise, and innovation to enhance and support delivery, influence policy, legislation, and secure resources. We steer the direction, set the priorities, and shape our organisation’s approach to deliver environmental outcomes and better regulate.

Experience/skills required

In your capability-based answers please demonstrate your:
• knowledge of water resources regulation, or transferable skills and a desire to learn
• experience of working across a business to improve delivery of outcomes
• ability to be a be a self-starter and work remotely in a dispersed team
• skills in prioritising workloads, to achieve results of a high standard
• ability to build and maintain good relationships across a range of customers

• strong communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to explain complex technical information to meet audience needs

You’ll have a range of development opportunities and appropriate training will be provided.
