The opportunity

You will work across will work across two main projects, specifically Project Tarsier and the Far North Queensland permanent sample plot project. You will provide advice on the ecology and hydrology research components of the projects to satisfy three main areas: Research, Verra Climate Community and Biodiversity (CCB) standards Compliance, and Project Management. Additionally, you will assist other researchers in developing data management plans and implementing data storage processes.

Project Tarsier

Project Tarsier is a research for development project aimed at improving our understanding on how to implement large-scale rehabilitation of deforested and degraded forest landscapes and enhance the socioeconomic status of communities through providing sustainable livelihoods. Using an action research approach, the project team are working with communities in the Philippines to restore over 10,000 ha of deforested and degraded landscapes, which will create a ‘living laboratory’ to address key research and policy issues.  The generation of carbon credits funds both the reforestation activities and sustainable livelihood development for local communities. The project is funded under the Shell Nature-based Solutions initiative.

Far North Queensland Project

Starting in the 1940’s, a network of long-term rainforest plots was established by the Queensland Department of Forestry (QDF) in the Wet Tropics region, covering a range of rainforest types and historic management practices. While the plot network was abandoned in 1987, the Tropical Forests and People Group has been working in these plots to restore them and to conduct research on rainforest tree species. Over 25 plots have now been re-established, with ongoing work to continue the restoration of this plot network. These plots and the long-term tree growth data are now invaluable to understand the ecology, growth and survival of rainforest tree species. The plot network and associated data are of global significance due to their extent and timescale.
