Founded in 1955, the Agricultural Science Center at Artesia is in the Pecos Valley Artesian Conservancy District. The 150 acres of land at the center has diverse soil types and utilizes Artesian water rights making it suitable for growing a variety of perennial and annual crops. Pecan production is expanding the Southeastern part of New Mexico and there are currently 5 acres of Western Schley and 5 acres of Pawnee pecan trees to support pecan research at the center.

NewArtesia was founded after the discovery of artesian well water that supplied farming and ranching. The area is home to vibrant dairy, agriculture, and oil and gas industries. Located in the Pecos Valley Artesian Conservancy District, Artesia has a long history of irrigated agriculture.

New Mexico State University is searching for a dynamic scientist to serve as an innovative and collaborative leader with administrative responsibilities as Superintendent of the Artesia Agricultural Science Center. Currently, scientists at the Center conduct research in soil, water, crop, and entomological sciences to enhance the agricultural, economic, environmental, and social well­being of stakeholders in southeastern New Mexico. A goal of the center is to expand research efforts to include efficient agricultural irrigation and management of critical water resources.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The successful candidate will conduct research, and provide administrative leadership, in cropping and water management systems that serve New Mexico and the US southwest. The incumbent will be based at the Agricultural Research Center at Artesia and is expected to interact with scientists and researchers at NMSU and throughout the state to develop and enhance production practices that New Mexico farmers could successfully implement. Research opportunities at the Center include assessing drought-, heat-, and salt-­tolerant crops that will thrive in arid- and semi-arid environments, and alternative water resources and practices. She/he will have the opportunity to provide leadership and effective research programming on issues related to irrigation design, water conservation, water management, and/or irrigation system management. The incumbent is expected to have a broad understanding of irrigation effects on crop performance and the impacts of irrigation on hydrology as well as on soil and groundwater processes and contamination. Research and program expectations could include development of irrigation technology to improve water use efficiency and enhance protection of water resources, development of irrigation best management practices related to irrigation methods, assisting growers and producers with irrigation system design and management, and determining irrigation scheduling techniques that will optimize water use while minimizing ground water contamination. The successful candidate is expected to have experience in educational programming and documented effectiveness in conducting research. The Center provides opportunities for collaboration across many disciplines and the individual is expected to work effectively on interdisciplinary research teams and with diverse clientele groups, including private, state, tribal and federal stakeholders.
Required QualificationsEarned Ph.D. in irrigation engineering, agricultural engineering, biosystems engineering, civil engineering, hydrology, water resources science, soil science, horticulture, crop science, agronomy, or related discipline. Desirable skills and experience include, but would not be limited to, irrigation system design and management, crop irrigation scheduling, and soil water/hydrological processes. A solid understanding of drip, surface, and sprinkler irrigation in a semiarid/arid environment and a basic understanding of plant­ water relationships are also desired. The candidate must qualify for tenure and promotion at the rank of associate professor or professor in the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences. The incumbent must have demonstrated evidence of successful grantsmanship. Ability to conduct research and supervise administrative and research support staff and graduate students. Ability to provide strategic leadership for the Center.
