Position overview:
This is a rare opportunity to join the team at the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF): one of the world’s leading non-profits working at the intersection of environmental conservation and human rights.
EJF’s Ocean team documents illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and associated human rights abuses. The team uses field-based evidence to advocate for policy changes with governments and improved corporate practises in the seafood sector. A key thread running through all of our advocacy is the need for greater transparency in global fisheries through the adoption of EJF’s Charter for Transparency.
Japan is one of the largest and most important seafood markets in the world. We are seeking a campaigner based in Tokyo who is passionate about protecting the marine environment and the livelihoods and other human rights of those who depend upon it. The successful candidate will be an experienced, determined and motivated person who has an understanding of research, advocacy, fisheries governance or other relevant fields. You are expected to be able to work independently and with international colleagues to conduct research, develop strategies and represent EJF to relevant organisations.
Reporting to EJF’s East Asia Manager and with frequent contact with other senior EJF staff across the world, this senior role will lead EJF’s work in Japan, working with international colleagues and other NGOs based in Japan to secure the improvement and implementation of robust measures to prevent the import of illegal and unethical seafood into Japan.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:
- Collaborate with EJF colleagues and external partners to develop and implement a detailed and actionable advocacy plan in Japan, including representing EJF in high-level meetings and events;
- Conduct field and desktop research to identify seafood tainted with IUU and human rights abuses in Japanese seafood supply chains;
- Produce high-quality EJF briefings, reports and other materials on the need for the improvement and implementation of robust and effective seafood import controls in Japan and the adoption of key transparency reforms;
- Proactively liaise with internal and external partners to ensure EJF’s investigation findings, advocacy, and other key messages on transparency are delivered to media, industry, and decision-makers;
- Work with EJF’s communications team and Japanese journalists to raise the awareness and understanding among Japanese government, industry, media and other key stakeholders about the problems of IUU fishing and human rights abuses in the seafood industry; and
- Develop EJF materials in Japanese and vice versa.
Requirements
- At least three years professional experience in environmental policy, oceans issues, human rights, government and/or other relevant fields;
- Demonstrable professional experience in research, public affairs or communications;
- Confident in representing EJF and to deliver EJF’s message to high-level government officials and industry members;
- Ability to work independently and also in a remote international team;
- Attention to detail and ability to manage and prioritise tasks; and
- Professional level fluency in Japanese and English.
