Trout Unlimited (TU) is a national organization with 300,000 members and supporters organized into over 400 chapters and councils nationwide. POSITION SUMMARY
Trout Unlimited seeks to hire a self-motivated and highly capable person to identify, plan, and implement projects to benefit aquatic resources and native and wild fish populations in the Gila River Basin of New Mexico. Projects may include stream and watershed habitat restoration, Gila trout reintroduction, removal or creation of fish barriers and other measures that protect or restore fish habitat. The project manager will work cooperatively with partners with diverse backgrounds and interests. The project manager will be expected to secure grants and raise funds to cover project costs, in collaboration with TU’s Development staff. The project manager will also be responsible for supporting TU’s advocacy work in the region, working closely with TU staff and coalition partners to advance state and federal policies that benefit native and wild trout.
Competitive candidates for this position will need to demonstrate strong project management skills, and an understanding of river restoration, hydrology, ecology, working agriculture and partnership-building, and a basic understanding of policies and laws that govern land and water management. Types of engagement activities include organizing volunteers to participate in field restoration projects, and community and decision-maker outreach. This position involves frequent work with agency partners and local stakeholders to develop and implement projects that benefit stream health and Gila trout populations. This position will require working in the high-alpine backcountry, in extremely remote areas of the Gila Wilderness using pack animals and primitive tools.
The position will be based in Silver City, New Mexico or another community in proximity to the Gila National Forest in southwest New Mexico.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Represent TU on the Gila Trout Recovery Team and develop and maintain relationships with agency members, including the U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and New Mexico Department of Game and Fish.
- Work closely with partners to implement projects that benefit aquatic resources and Gila trout populations including in remote backcountry locations
- Manage grant agreements and reporting requirements.
- Contract with consultants and contractors to design and construct restoration projects.
- Write grant proposals to local, state, and federal agencies, as well as foundations
- Monitor project results, including fish usage of improved habitats.
- Attend New Mexico TU volunteer leadership meetings and communicate regularly with them to understand and serve member engagement needs.
- Support efforts to advance state and federal policy that benefit Gila trout, working closely with TU colleagues and external partners.
- Conduct grassroots outreach to develop community advocates for policy goals and restoration work.
- Collaborate with TU communications staff to convey the benefits of the conservation work to decision-makers and other target audiences.

Requirements
- A B.S or M.S. degree in biology, ecology, hydrology, engineering, or a related field.
- Four years of relevant experience in watershed restoration, fisheries biology, environmental policy, or similar field.
- Demonstrated restoration project development and management skills
- Excellent interpersonal and communications skills (written and oral).
- Professional experience working with landowners, resource managers, and other interested parties in a collaborative setting.
- Familiarity with pack animals and work in a wilderness setting including multi-day pack trips.
- Experience with grant writing using Microsoft Office products.
- Strong analytical skills.
- Passion for organizing and motivating people.
- Ability to problem solve and think creatively to achieve a conservation mission.
- Strong time-management and organizational skills, with exceptional attention to detail.
- Ability and willingness to travel. Valid driver’s license and vehicle are required (4×4 vehicle is beneficial).
SALARY AND BENEFITS
Staff and leadership at TU understand that life outside of work is important to personal health, and we strive to create a healthy and family-friendly atmosphere. This is a full-time position with a generous benefits package. The salary range is $53,000 to $61,000 annually.
