EPA Office/Lab and LocationA research training opportunity is currently available at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Water (OW), Immediate Office (IO), with the Communications and External Engagement Staff in Washington, D.C. 

Research Project: The Communications and External Engagement Staff in EPA’s Office of Water supports a wide breadth of outreach activities for the office. Topics include, but not limited to, drinking water, storm-water, wastewater, oceans, wetlands, infrastructure, health criteria, permitting, and more. The objective of this project is to support the Communications office through outreach activities, researching media topics, writing documents, and overall support of effective public engagement on water issues. 

Learning ObjectivesThis opportunity will provide the participant with exposure to a broad range of technical and policy issues surrounding water programs. The participant will have the opportunity to apply their writing skills to engage with the public on water-related topics. Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant may have the opportunity to be involved in the following team activities: strategic communications roll outs, social media campaigns, collaboration on high-visibility press engagement, talking point development and speech writing. The research participant will have the opportunity to collaborate with Office of Water program offices, including Office of Ground Water and Drinking Water; Office of Wastewater Management; Office of Wetlands, Oceans and Watersheds; and the Office of Science and Technology.

Appointment LengthThe appointment will initially be for one year and may be renewed up to three additional years upon EPA recommendation and subject to availability of funding.

Level of ParticipationThe appointment is full-time.

Participant StipendThe participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. At this time, the annual stipend for bachelor’s degrees is ~$50,643 and master’s degrees is ~$61,947. Click here for detailed information about full-time stipends.

EPA Security ClearanceCompletion of a successful background investigation by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) is required for an applicant to be on-boarded at EPA.

ORISE InformationThis program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and EPA. Participants do not become employees of EPA, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

ORISE offers all ORISE EPA graduate students and Postdocs a free 5-year membership to the National Postdoctoral Association (NPA).

The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g., facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a bachelor’s or master’s degree in one of the relevant disciplines. Degree must have been received within the past five years.

Preferred Skills:

  • Relevant experience in communicating with the public
  • Relevant experience in environmental science or policy
  • Strong writing skills highly preferred.
  • Skills in teamwork and collaboration would enhance the research experience.
