Hydrodynamic modeler with passion for software development

Deltares

Delft, Netherlands 🇳🇱

We are looking for a hydrodynamic modeller with experience in or passion for software development and wants to grow in this area! Do you want to use your modelling talent and give specialist advice to clients to help them realise safe, cost-efficient and sustainable coastal developments? Are you enthusiastic about designing and developing new software, and helping to make modelling software that keeps deltas safe and our environment healthy? Then we are looking for you!

What can you expect as a hydrodynamic model and software developer?

You will be in the unique position to combine modelling in projects for our clients and developing our state-of-the art software. This will allow you to be at the forefront to identify and implement innovative new developments in our software and to apply them directly in relevant projects.

Together with your team you will work on innovative projects related to: flushing of coastal developments, impacts of renewable energy like floating solar, aquathermal energy, coastal development layout optimisation, hydrodynamic modelling as basis for water quality and ecological modelling, etc. These projects require innovative solutions. To find these solutions you apply D-HYDRO modelling software.

Your main tasks are:

  • Set up and run numerical models (like Delft3D, D-HYDRO) in different types of projects, analyzing the results and post-process these into clear visualizations and presentations fitting the needs of our clients;
  • Carry out research and development projects to develop new and innovative knowledge products in the field of coastal hydrodynamics;
  • Publish your work in relevant journals and give presentations at conferences;
  • Participate in the maintenance and support process, investigate customer problems and improve and update the software products.

Furthermore, you will contribute to developing high-quality software products aimed at modelling free surface flows in oceans, coastal seas, estuaries, rivers, lakes and rural & urban areas, including the D-HYDRO suite. It depends on your existing knowledge/skills in software developing, how you will contribute in this part. The goal is that you will write codes and further develop the D–hydro software series and be the bridge between advisors and developers. You are not alone, we work in a multidisciplinary team to use, create, maintain and improve applications and innovative solutions.

We will guide you in your role. What we need from you is that you are eager to learn!

What does Deltares expect from a hydrodynamic model and software developer?

  • You have knowledge of physical processes and associated numerical discretizations and (non)linear solvers, preferably in CFD applications;
  • Knowledge and relevant experience in one or more numerical geophysical models for simulating free surface flows;
  • You have experience in developing scientific applications and innovative solutions and you have a proven affinity with software engineering;
  • You are a motivated professional with a PhD or MSc degree preferably in civil engineering, climate science, marine science, or in physics or mathematics;
  • You speak and write English fluently and if you don’t speak Dutch you are willing to learn this quickly (via our Dutch curriculum).

What we offer

  • Deltares offers a year contract with the prospect of a permanent contract and competitive salary. Classification is based on your experience;
  • Excellent training opportunities for personal and professional growth;
