Water Infrastructure and Operations Branch (WIOB) is part of Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation and has the mandated responsibility to safely operate and maintain provincially owned water infrastructure.  The Branch is made up of multidisciplinary teams related to Operations, Maintenance, Capital Replacement/Rehabilitation, Alberta Dam and Canal Safety, Environmental Mitigation and Monitoring and Land Management administration. WIOB is Province wide with office locations in Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Vulcan, Calgary, Red Deer, Edmonton, Camrose, Spruce Grove and Peace River as well as several field offices at major infrastructure like the St Mary Dam, Oldman River Dam and Dickson Dam.

Role

Are you a highly skilled and experienced Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Technologist looking for a new challenge? Do you thrive in a fast-paced environment where your expertise is critical to maintaining the safety and efficiency of water infrastructure projects? If so, we want to hear from you!

We are currently seeking an O&M Technologist to join our team in Central Alberta. In this role, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation, maintenance and inspections of various complex provincially owned water infrastructure projects over a large geographical area in Central Alberta.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the maintenance, repair and rehabilitation of all provincially owned water management infrastructure in the Camrose, Red Deer, and Vermilion areas as well as associated mechanical, electrical and civil works.
  • Complete required scheduled inspections to determine changing site conditions, structural conditions and maintenance requirements.
  • Monitor projects to ensure operational objectives are being met during varied flow conditions, including floods and droughts.
  • Participate in the on-site Workplace Health and Safety Program in accordance with the Department’s Health and Safety policy.

Qualifications:
Two (2) year technical diploma preferably in Civil Engineering Technology, Water Resources or in a related field plus two (2) years related experience in the operation, maintenance and inspection of water infrastructure projects.  Experience with other civil infrastructure will be considered.

Additional Requirements:

  • A valid Class 5 driver’s license or equivalent
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical and civil maintenance and construction
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations and possess strong communication skills
  • Strong computer skills

Equivalencies may be considered – directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Assets:

  • Previous experience with and knowledge of SCADA systems, electrical and control systems, motors, hoists, pumps, generators and cranes is ideal.
  • Knowledge of and experience with a variety of hand tools and maintenance equipment (e.g. chainsaws, drills, weed whackers, skid steer, ATV etc.)
  • Familiarity with Alberta’s Water Act, Dam Safety Regulations, and Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation, and Code

  • the ability be a self-starter that takes initiative, proactively anticipates problems before they develop and takes steps to solve them

Agility: Conditions for operation of infrastructure vary seasonally, and with unplanned events (flood, infrastructure failure or damage etc.)  Adapting to changing conditions, priorities and project delays or constraints is an important competency to meeting project goals.

Drive for Results: This position requires initiative related to work planning and scheduling, identifying areas for improvement as a result of inspections, and diligence in operational planning and execution.   

Develop Networks: Engagement and relationship building with stakeholders adjacent to water projects is an essential element of this position.  Ongoing relationship building and maintenance is critical with other internal technical support groups within the department, and with other departments is also essential.

Creative Problem Solving: Must troubleshoot and identify infrastructure and maintenance issues, and provide solutions to fix the issue.  Problem solving must leverage personal experience, as well as input and knowledge from team members and other support groups. Follow policies and manuals related to operations.

Position Information

Office located in Camrose

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week (permanent full time)

Monday to Friday (08:00 am-16:30 pm) 

Evening and weekend work (overtime) is occasionally required

Participation in a 24/7 standby rotation is required   

Standby and overtime will be compensated in addition to advertised salary
