Research Assistant in Community Mobilization for Water Safety
The Institute of Health Systems ia a nonprofit, autonomous health systems research institute founded in 1990, on the principle of multi-disciplinary, interdisciplinary health systems research, application & services for public health. The IHS strives to build local capacity & the global knowledge base for better health systems and to improve public health. Activities include research, individual, institutional, & systemic capacity development for health systems strengthening.

The water quality monitoring program at IHS has developed in partnership with the Hyderabad Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB/MWB). The HMWSSB has engaged the Institute as a third-party Water Quality Monitoring Agency. Focus groups and community mobilisation for water safety is one of the components of the Water Quality Monitoring Program. The objective of the community mobilisation is to develop strategies for water safety in slum areas of Hyderabad and build community awareness about the importance of Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH) for public health. Focus group discussions (FGDs) are conducted regularly in identified slum areas to gather information about consumer perceptions of metro water supply through domestic connections, public stand posts and tankers and to understand consumer concerns on water availability, regularity, and quantity of supply. FGDs also help to understand community knowledge, attitudes and practices about water quality and related issues, usage, storage, handling, hygiene, sanitation, and health status. In addition, the FGDs are used to inform & educate the target group on good hygiene practices and measures to prevent waterborne diseases.
