Description

Trout Unlimited’s Montana Water Program is seeking a summer restoration intern. The intern will work out of the Bozeman Trout Unlimited office and support activities that benefit trout conservation in the Yellowstone, Gallatin, and Madison watersheds with the potential to support additional trout conservation activities across western Montana. The position has funding for 480 work hours beginning on July 5th, 2023. Depending on the applicant’s needs, this can be a full- or part-time position. Tasks will likely include:

· Assist TU staff with implementing and developing restoration projects, monitoring, and grant writing

· Conduct monthly flow monitoring of TU instream flow leases and enter streamflow data 

· Participate in electrofishing for population estimates and brook trout removal

· Support TU outreach including coordinating stream cleanups, tabling outreach events, and postings on social media 

· Aid partners with fieldwork when assistance is needed by Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks, US Forest Service, Gallatin Watershed Council, or Montana Freshwater Partners

Requirements

· Current student or recent college graduate with studies related to fisheries, wildlife, biology, hydrology, or natural resources

· Capability of lifting heavy gear, working in and around water, and hiking all day over rough terrain in inclement weather

· Comfortable working in remote locations with the potential of encountering wildlife including grizzly bears

· Current driver’s license and dependable vehicle

· Experience using Microsoft office suite 

· Housing is not provided; the intern must make their own housing arrangements in Bozeman or the surrounding area

· Must possess a passion for coldwater conservation and the ability to work as part of a team

Other Desirable Skills (not required):

· Experience monitoring stream flows

· Knowledge of stream restoration techniques

· Experience hiking and camping in remote places

· Familiarity with Trout Unlimited and its mission

· Experience electrofishing and identifying trout species

· Equipment for camping and a quality phone or camera for taking pictures

· Experience with social media, Arc GIS, and Microsoft business suit

Salary Description

$18/hr
