Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Job description

Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy

The above NERC funded, full-time post is available 1 July 2023 to 31 December 2023 in the Camborne School of Mines.

The post

The faculty wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to participate in the NERC Large Grant: ‘Legacy Wastes in the Coastal Zone: Environmental Risks and Management Futures’ (2020-2024). Through direct disposal of wastes within the coastal zone, and via downstream transport of more distal upstream material, the UK has considerable environmental pollution legacies in coastal water bodies from historical waste deposits. These wastes pose risks to the environment, human health and can have significant current and future economic implications. The project will undertake a coordinated approach to comprehensively investigate the spatial extent, characteristics, and physical and biogeochemical behaviour of municipal and industrial legacy wastes across the UK.

The successful applicant will carry out sampling of legacy waste samples from representative sites in the UK, conduct geochemical, mineralogy and spectroscopic characterisation of these samples, carry out experiments to evaluate contaminant mobility during wetting-drying cycles and at the freshwater-seawater interface.

The project will benefit from the world-class facilities both at the Camborne School of Mines and the Environment & Sustainability Institute, University of Exeter. The former is a world-leading Mining and Geoscience Department with a history dating back more than 125 years, whilst the latter is a £30 m interdisciplinary centre leading cutting-edge research into solutions to problems of environmental change. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work with the research team (13 investigators from 7 UK universities, 3 post-doctoral research fellows and 7 project partners), visit legacy waste sites in the UK, attend national and international conferences, write peer-reviewed scientific articles and develop policy, management and remediation system recommendations.

About you

The successful applicant will be able to develop research objectives, projects and proposals; identify sources of research funding and contribute to the process of securing funds and make presentations at conferences and other events.

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD or equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study. The successful applicant will be a nationally recognised authority in Environmental Geochemistry and Mineralogy and possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop research programmes and methodologies. The successful applicant will also be able to work collaboratively, supervise the work of others and act as team leader as required. Applicants will be able to conduct geochemical, mineralogical and spectroscopic analysis and related experiments using ICP-MS, ICP-OES, IC, XRD, SEM-EDS, QEMSCAN, EPMA, µ-CT, XRF and pXRF, write scientific manuscripts, give presentations, engage with stakeholders and learn new techniques.
