Job Summary:
The Biological Technician (Water Monitoring Technician) will support the following programs:
Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Columbia Basin Water Monitoring Framework and High Elevation Program Managers, the responsibilities of the Biological Technician (Water Monitoring Technician) include:
Water Monitoring
- Collect lake and stream water quality measurements and samples
- Conduct hydrometric site visits and take wading measurements of stream flow
- Download data from environmental data loggers
- Equipment maintenance and calibration
- Collect CABIN and STREAM biomonitoring samples
- Support the installation of hydrometric and climate monitoring equipment
Data Management
- Support data management and record keeping for the programs
- Digitizing of historic data
- Support the operations of the Columbia Basin Water Hub database
Communications and Community Engagement
- Support the delivery of community training and workshops
- Liaise with community volunteers
- Take photos and support the development of communications materials about the programs
Core Competencies:
- Experience or understanding of hydrometric monitoring
- Experience or understanding of water quality monitoring
- Willingness to adhere to standards and protocols for water monitoring
- Comfortable working and hiking in remote areas and working in and around moving water
- Working outdoors in all weather conditions
- Capable and willing to work long hours in the field
- Safety oriented
- Attention to detail
Qualifications:
- Certificate, diploma or degree in environmental sciences or related field, or equivalent experience
- CABIN Field Assistant certification or greater an asset
- Reliable, self-motivated and independent with a demonstrated ability to collaborate well within a team
- Demonstrated ability to support multiple projects, set priorities, meet deadlines and support others to do the same
- Occupational First Aid Level One or greater
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Own vehicle an asset
