Mission and objectives
As the United Nations lead agency on international development, UNDP works in 170 countries and territories to eradicate poverty and reduce inequality. We help countries to develop policies, leadership skills, partnering abilities, institutional capabilities, and to build resilience to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Our work is concentrated in three focus areas; sustainable development, democratic governance and peace building, and climate and disaster resilience.

Context
United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the UN lead agency on international development, working in 170 countries and territories to eradicate poverty and reduce inequality. One of its key priorities is to support countries accelerate ambitious action on climate change. UNDP’s Climate Promise initiative supports over 120 countries to enhance their climate ambitions under the Paris Agreement, with a focus on greater emissions reduction and resilience building. The second phase of the Climate Promise and UNDP’s NDC Support Programme (NDC SP) are focusing on the implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) through advocacy, long term planning as well as financial and technical support to countries on NDC implementation in the context of national development priorities.
UNDP also supports countries in accessing the Green Climate Fund Readiness and Preparatory Support Programme, that aims to support developing countries to strengthen their institutional capacities, governance mechanisms, and planning and programming frameworks towards a transformational long-term climate action. Under this Readiness Programme, UNDP supports countries to advance their National Adaptation Plan (NAP) processes, supporting around 50 countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Central Europe in scaling up the integration of climate change adaptation into policy, planning, and investments.

Recognizing the need to accelerate adaptation, UNDP is implementing the adaptation pipeline accelerator (APA) initiative together with its partners and across various teams internally including the Climate Promise, UNDP’s climate change adaptation portfolio, the NAP portfolio and others.

Task description
UNDP together with its partners and across number of internal practices are supporting select number of countries in accelerating their adaptation efforts by providing support to translating adaptation priorities to investment pipelines. In addition to country specific activities, a global component intends to facilitate knowledge exchange on accelerating adaptation among vulnerable countries through South-South exchanges and the development of knowledge products, specifically focusing on adaptation finance and monitoring, evaluation and learning.
Under the direct supervision of the Senior Technical Advisor on Climate Change Adaptation Policy and Planning , the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Support the implementation of the adaptation pipeline accelerator (APA) initiative focusing on knowledge management;
  • Contribute to the development of knowledge products by preparing drafts, capturing and disseminating knowledge using creative and user-friendly formats;
  • Conduct research on thematic areas relevant to adaptation acceleration, especially adaptation finance and monitoring, evaluation and learning;
  • Organize knowledge sharing events and South-South exchanges (in-person and online);
  • Update the relevant parts of the NAP and Climate Promise Databases;
  • Draft relevant reports based on country inputs and global activities;
  • Contribute to communication efforts by drafting content for online articles, presentations, preparing infographics etc.
  • Contribute to the wider Climate Hub and Climate Promise knowledge management efforts;
  • Translate knowledge and communication products to different languages (depending on the language skills of the selected candidate).
  • Any other related work assigned by the supervisor.

Eligibility criteria

Age: 27 – 80

Nationality: Candidate must be a national of a country other than the country of assignment.

Requirements

Required experience
3 years of experience in climate change adaptation, climate finance, knowledge management, communication or other relevant field at the national and/or international level,
• Excellent communication skills, both oral and written; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills;
• Familiarity with Sustainable Development Goals and international climate change adaptation discussions;
• Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work in a multicultural environment
• Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development and data
visualization;
• Self-motivated, ability to work independently.

UNV Entitlements in a Nutshell:

International Specialist UN Volunteers:
• receive approx. USD 2099 USD for Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) for Istanbul Duty Station.
Family allowance is also provided based on dependency status (USD 250 for 1 dependent, USD 450 for 2 or more dependents, monthly)
• are entitled for 100% health coverage by CIGNA.
• accrue an entitlement to annual leave at the rate of 2.5 working days per completed month of volunteer assignment.
• receive entry allowance (4000 USD) at the beginning of the assignment and exit lumpsum (225 USD per month) at the end of their assignment.

Specific to this assignment, remote working might be possible in line with the Host Entity’s flexible working arrangements. If the incumbent relocate to Istanbul, and additional accommodation supplement apply at the rate of 20% of VLA.
