 The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is hiring a hydrogeologist for our Technical Services Division located in Boise, Idaho. This position will provide technical support to our Waste and Ground Water Division projects.
 
 Waste Division support includes geotechnical support for environmental remediation at Comprehensive Environmental Response and Liability Act (CERCLA) and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) projectsGround Water Division support includes aquifer characterization, fate and transport analysis, ground water modeling, and document reviews.Example of Duties

  • Source water assessment models
  • Document reviews
  • Potential contaminant inventory for public water systems. 
  • CERCLA projects
  • Solid waste landfills 
  • Remediation projects 

Additional support to divisions and regions:

  • Evaluate models and related reports.
  • Evaluate monitoring networks and work plans.
  • Evaluate well construction and aquifer characteristics for assigned projects. 
  • Participate in confined animal feeding operation siting team projects.
  • Review regional reports.
  • Conduct ground water sampling.
  • Provide support for DEQ’s quality assurance activities.
  • With supervision, provide expertise to identify project goals and objectives, work plan development, and actions to achieve remedial goals for impacted sites.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a Bachelor’s degree in the physical or biological sciences or related field; AND at least four years’ experience in scientific assessment, environmental protection and pollution control techniques, such as designing, reviewing, or implementing scientific projects, investigations remediation projects, monitoring projects; OR organizing and interpreting laboratory and field data; performing activities associated with pollution prevention and mitigation; and recommending and overseeing the completion of remedial actions. OR Possession of a Master’s degree in the sciences or related field; AND two years’ experience as defined above; OR Possession of a Doctor of Philosophy in the sciences or related field. 

Specialty Minimum Qualifications (required for this position):

  • DEQ (3116) Remediation: Do you have considerable knowledge of remediation?
    Typically gained through possession of a college degree in Hydrogeology, Geology, Geophysics, Biology, Environmental Science, Chemistry, Soil Science, Chemical, Civil or Environmental Engineering, or a closely related field; OR education and experience equivalent to an undergraduate degree; AND two (2) years of work experience in investigating, monitoring and remediating past contamination, evaluating fate and transport of contaminants, applying short-term and long-term control and clean-up technologies; OR Possess an unrelated college degree AND have successfully completed two (2) years of environmental college-level coursework supplemented with four (4) years full-time work experience as outlined above; OR At least eight (8) years of work experience in investigating, monitoring and remediating past contamination, evaluating fate and transport of contaminants, applying short-term and long-term control and clean-up technologies, and/or interpretation and application of federal and/or state environmental rules and regulations.
    Education/Experience Equivalency: Successful completion of sixty (60) semester hours of study, including twenty-four (24) credited hours in a subject required for the particular degree, is equivalent to two (2) years of undergraduate education; and/or Each two (2) years of qualifying work experience as described on the announcement may be equivalent to one (1) year of undergraduate education.
  • DEQ (3134) Ground Water: Do you have education and experience in the areas of aquifer assessment, aquifer protection, ground water or surface and drinking water pollution; such as designing, reviewing or implementing any of the following: water contamination investigations, ground water remediation projects, TMDL evaluations, ground water and surface or drinking water monitoring projects.
    Typically met by possession of a Bachelor’s degree with coursework in either geology, hydrogeology, geophysics, environmental science, geochemistry, environmental health, environmental or civil engineering, soil science, or in a closely related field AND approximately three (3) years of full-time work experience in the areas of aquifer assessment, aquifer protection, ground water or surface and drinking water pollution; such as designing, reviewing or implementing any of the following: water contamination investigations, groundwater remediation projects, TMDL evaluations, ground water and surface or drinking water monitoring projects.
    OR Possession of a Master’s degree in any of the previously listed fields AND approximately two (2) years of full-time work experience performing the previous examples of work.
  • DEQ (5647) Environmental Rules and Regulations: Do you have knowledge of environmental rules and regulations?
    Typically met by successful completion of at least one (1) college level course covering topics related to interpretation and application of federal and/or state environmental rules; OR At least six (6) months experience involving interpretation and application of federal and/or state environmental rules.

Physical requirements:

  • Ability to sit and work on a computer for 2-4 hours at a time
  • Ability to reach and bend for filing purposes
  • Some periods of heavy reading and typing required
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds when working with file boxes
  • Ability to occasionally walk in rugged terrain, work in hot or cold environments, tolerates work in the vicinity of heavy equipment, loud noise, and other related hazards.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Ability to climb ladders, staircases, work on uneven terrain
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds over rough terrain
  • Ability to work in adverse or inclement weather
  • Field sites may involve working near and with drilling rigs, backhoes, trucks and other large equipment in rough terrain
  • Occasional travel required
  • May work in vicinity of loud noise
  • May come into contact with hazardous waste/materials
  • Eyesight needs to be 20/20 (as corrected) to observe field compliance
