Organizational Setting

The Land and Water Division (NSL) aims at enhancing the agricultural productivity and nutrition by advancing the sustainable use of land and water resources through their improved governance, management, development and conservation. It addresses the challenges member countries face in ensuring productive and efficient use of land and water resources in order to meet present and future demands for agricultural products, while ensuring the long-term sustainability of the land and water quantity and quality. It promotes equitable access to these natural resources with a view to enhancing productivity, livelihoods and ecosystem services. It provides assistance to member nations in developing policies, programmes, best practices and tools in the fields of rainfed agriculture and irrigation and drainage, soil conservation, drought mitigation, water rights, access to natural resources, and improvement of land markets.

The purpose of this call is to provide FAO’s Land and Water Division (NSL) and the Water group with a list of qualified candidates for a number of profiles with different specializations to enhance the FAO Water portfolio as indicated below:

•    Food systems, water scarcity, natural resources management, food security and nutrition 
•    Contracts will be either home-based or in FAO HQs with required travel for field missions, where relevant.
•    The post is located in the Water Team of the Land and Water Division (NSL), more specifically, in the Nutrition-sensitive agriculture water productivity project.

Reporting Lines

The Incumbents will report to the Project Manager of the Nutrition-sensitive Agriculture Water Productivity Project, under the overall supervision of the Deputy-Director of the Land and Water Division (NSL).

Technical Focus 

Support the monitoring and evaluation activities of the project, more specifically on data collection, cleaning and analysis (water, agriculture and macro and micro-nutrient data) for the calculation of nutrition-sensitive agriculture water productivity indicators. Including support the drafting of country reports, policy briefs and factsheets, as well as the preparation of training materials in collaboration with the national implementation partners.  

Tasks and responsibilities

•    Provide technical support to the project, more specifically, the monitoring and evaluation component in all pilot countries, and liaise at a technical level with national and global partners for the efficient integration and harmonization of data collection, analysis and dissemination methods across project countries.
•    Assist the NSL Deputy Director in policy briefs development related to water and nutrition and related Divisional publications and awareness campaign.  
•    Assist and advise on data collection, cleaning and analysis (water, agriculture and nutrition-related data) from primary and secondary sources, including archiving, maintenance and updating of the project database. When applicable, assist in the collection and analysis of macro and micro-nutrient data for the calculation of nutrition-sensitive agricultural water productivity indicators.
•    Undertake analysis, provide technical input for plans and reports and edit/revise technical/scientific documents related to water scarcity in agriculture.
•    Support the preparation of training materials for capacity building of project beneficiaries and community-based extension workers on the use of the nutrition-sensitive agriculture water productivity guidelines.
•    Contribute to relevant studies, country reports and analyses, knowledge products and dissemination materials related to food security and nutrition, agriculture, water productivity, including guidelines, capacity building and training material.
•    Support the communication and visibility activities of the project, including the overall sensitization and awareness campaign of the project.
•    Perform any other duties when required.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

•    University degree in agricultural economics, natural resources management, agriculture, irrigation, nutrition or other related fields – those with a PhD will have an added Advantage.
•    Minimum of one year of relevant working experience for Category C or minimum five years for Category B in supporting project management, formulation and implementation; economic and quantitative analysis of food and agricultural issues; food security and nutrition analysis; water productivity assessment and capacity building at national and field levels.
•    Excellent (verbal and written) communication skills in English (working knowledge – level C), and limited knowledge (level B) of another FAO official language (French or Spanish). In the case of PSA, a working knowledge of English will be sufficient.

•    Extent and relevance of experience in data collection, cleaning and analysis (water, agriculture and nutrition related data) from primary and secondary sources.

•    Essential interpersonal skills for teamwork and capacity for work and analysis in multicultural, multisector and multidisciplinary environments.
•    Proven ability to deliver quality output working under tight deadlines.
•    Relevant experience and knowledge in collecting, managing and analysing technical information and data, as well as in sustainable development in the agricultural sector.
•    Relevant experience in the preparation, editing and revision of technical/scientific documents and in organizing meetings and workshops.
•    Very good capacity to conduct synthesis and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data.
•    Ability to work on international teams and with remote supervision
