Overview
The Utah Water Research Laboratory at Utah State University has an opening for a research engineer to join our hydraulics laboratory team. The selected candidate will work with faculty principal investigators on highly variable physical hydraulics modeling and testing research projects in the hydraulics lab. The selected candidate will report to the UWRL hydraulics lab manager.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the layout and construction of hydraulic projects in the laboratory, including engineering of the sizes, scales, and locations of physical hydraulic models.
- Manage or co-manage hydraulics construction projects and testing as well as any personnel working on those projects. They will coordinate the schedule of personnel, space, equipment, and water allocations with the lab manager in order to meet the technical and timing requirements of multiple projects.
- Perform experiments, and direct others in the performance of experiments, needed to produce the hydraulics data required by research and testing projects.
- Help the lab manager train faculty, students, and laboratory technicians in the proper use of instrumentation and procedures for hydraulics data collection.
- Work closely with clients visiting the lab.
- This person will have a large role in safety training and keep all safety training documented while updating the UWRL Safety plan when needed. Serve on the UWRL Safety Committee.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s degree in civil or mechanical engineering with courses related to fluid mechanics and hydraulics.
- Experience with engineering, construction and construction methods.
- Experience using measurement instrumentation.
- A demonstrated ability to communicate well (both written and oral).
- Experience in the preparation of technical reports and papers.
- Experience managing people working in a laboratory setting.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Hydraulics laboratory experience.
- Technical knowledge of pumped and gravity-fed pipeline systems.
- Experience with Froude modeling and related hydraulic model design and construction.
- Training and experience in pipeline design and layout, pipeline fabrication, and test component design and fabrication.
- Knowledge of hydraulics instrumentation including transmitters, ultrasonic flow meters, magnetic flow meters, Venturi flow meters, differential producers, and knowledge of Hart protocol and the ability to troubleshoot and identify instrumentation problems.
- The ability to prepare and interpret model/pipeline design drawings needed for hydraulic projects.
