Project background and vacancy description
You will be a core member of the Horizon Europe NAPSEA project team (https://napsea.eu/). The position will last 2 years and requires that you will be working from our location in Delft, The Netherlands.

The central aims of the NAPSEA project are to support national and local authorities in selecting effective nutrient load reduction measures and to gain political support for their implementation. NAPSEA will use an integrated approach to address nutrient pollution from source to sea, combining three complementary perspectives (1: governance and policy; 2: models and pathways and 3: ecosystem health). The geographical scope of the project covers the catchment of the Wadden Sea, with four case studies. NAPSEA will showcase best practices on the implementation of socially acceptable, sustainable and effective measures for these case studies. Effects of climate change and co-benefits of measures for reducing greenhouse gas emissions are taken into account.

Deltares leads the consortium and contributes largely to work in the work packages on Measures and Pathways and on Ecosystem Health. The project started in October 2022 and will run till September 2025 with an international consortium of 7 partners from 3 countries.

You will be engaged in various project activities. Tasks include applying and/or evaluating models and data science tools that are used for integrating hydrology and nutrient transport processes. The approach of NAPSEA is to consider the continuum from source to sea, using the Rhine and Elbe Rivers-North Sea coastal system as case study. Deltares focuses on the effect of measures reducing nutrient losses from agriculture in the Hunze area (source) as well as the effects of measures for Lake Zuiderlaardemeer and the Wadden Sea ecosystem (sea), you will work particularly on these topics. Part of your task is also to attend project meetings and to contribute to high‑quality project deliverables. For all activities you will collaborate intensely with international project partners.

What do we expect from you?

  • Relevant scientific background and research skills and a PhD in related field;
  • Knowledge of- and experience with hydrological modelling, affinity with water quality research and nutrient transport;
  • You are team-player and open-minded to the adjacent fields of interest;
  • Analytical and presentation skills to communicate research results;
  • Programming skills (or willingness to learn), with preference on Matlab or Python;
  • Fluent in English, speaking and writing, with high quality reporting skills;
  • It is a hard requirement for this position that you will be working from our Delft office, if you are not located in the Netherlands already you must be willing to relocate;
  • Willingness to travel abroad and work with international project members;
  • A professional attitude to work, colleagues and clients;
  • Availability by September 2023 is an asset.
