The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a CGIAR Research Center is looking for a detail-oriented, self-motivated, and dynamic team player to join IWMI’s headquarters in Colombo, Sri Lanka as National Researcher – Hydrology and Water Management.

The National researcher will specifically work on developing large scale semi-distributed and distributed hydrological models for Limpopo and Inkomati transboundary basins as a part of the Digital Innovations (DI) Initiative to support basin management. The national researcher will also undertake hydrological modelling activities in bi-lateral projects in Sri Lanka.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Implement hydrological modelling of large transboundary basins using open source/free modelling tools like QSWAT, HBV, airGR, HEC-HMS, etc
  • Undertake multi-scale water resources assessments to support operational management of basins
  • Support to port the developed hydrological models into web-platforms to enable ease of access for the stakeholders
  • Comprehensive assessment of current state and scenario simulation for the future of the hydrological processes including climate and land use change impacts.
  • Collect, manage, and analyze both spatial and non-spatial hydrological data for basins in which IWMI has long term engagements.
  • Lead in preparation for events/workshops/conferences in the form of background analysis, concept notes and presentations.
  • Draft project and research reports.
  • Engage with key stakeholders for project implementation and dissemination of project outcomes to contribute to development goals.
  • Assist in developing new research proposals.
  • Produce articles for peer-reviewed publication.

Requirements

MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Essential:

  • PhD with 3 to 5 years experience or master with 5 to 7 years experience in the field of hydrology and water management or a closely related discipline.
  • Prior experience in applying Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) for water resources assessment of large basins.
  • Experience in learning and applying new hydrological modelling tools for basin scale water resources assessment.
  • Strong analytical mindset.
  • Peer reviewed publications on hydrological modelling, climate change impact assessment, etc

Desirable:

  • An understanding of development challenges, especially in relation to river basin water and food security, in India and broadly South Asia.
  • Experience in using distributed hydrological models like VIC, mHM, etc
  • Proven competence in spatial and non-spatial data analysis

This is a nationally recruited position and only candidates who are eligible to work in Sri Lanka will be considered. The duration of the contract will initially be for a period of three years.
