Introduction

The Wisconsin DNR is hiring an LTE (Limited Term Employee) – Water Resouces Management Specialist located at Superior Service Center in Superior, Wisconsin.

Position Summary

This position will assist Lake Superior Team members implement priorities identified in the Lake Superior Lakewide Action and Management Plan (LAMP), Office of Great Water’s strategic plan and associated WDNR Lake Superior Action Plan. Work is focused on implementation of monitoring and assessment of the Lake Superior coastal and basin water resources, including evaluation of restoration and protections project. This position will assist the Lake Superior Sediment and Monitoring Coordinator with water quality and sediment monitoring, including field preparation, sample collection, data entry and compilation. Position will also manage projects and special assignments as directed by the Lake Superior Supervisor. 

60% – Assist the Lake Superior Sediment and Monitoring Coordinator, Lake Superior Wild Rice Coordinator and other team members implement, and conduct priority monitoring identified along the Lake Superior coastline, estuaries, and water resources within the basin. This includes effectiveness monitoring associated with restoration and protection projects to verify project objectives are met. 

20% – Management and assessment of monitoring and other data, including compilation of results and writing reports. This may involve gathering of historical data, reports, scientific literature, or other information or data on waterway impairments or restoration efforts for Lake Superior. Researching related topics; providing data quality checks; synthesizing information; and preparing summaries for use in assessing basin conditions, specific impairments, progress towards goals, etc. 

10% – Developing data products to be utilized in LAMP/AOC documentation including memos, spreadsheets, graphs, reports, narrative, maps, databases, or web pages. 

10% – Management of projects and other special assignments and duties as directed by Lake Superior Supervisor. 

Salary Information

This position pays $20.50 per hour and is in pay schedule and range 15-04. For current and eligible former State employees, compensation will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan. 

Job Details

This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position. LTE positions do not automatically lead to permanent state employment or enjoy the same benefits as permanent employees; however, these positions do offer valuable work experience and an opportunity to learn more about career opportunities with the Department of Natural Resources and the State of Wisconsin.  

LTE employees are limited to working 1039 hours per position within a twelve-month period.

Qualifications

Required:
– Education or experience in natural resource, environmental restoration, ecology, biology, water resource management, civil engineering, water resources monitoring, fish and wildlife ecology, or other related fields 
– Experienced and familiar with uses and methods for water resources related monitoring and analysis of environmental or natural resources data and research utilizing scientific literature and publicly available data repositories 
– Excellent organizational and data management skills 
– Experience with quality management and assurance plans (especially: collection, handling, and laboratory analysis of water quality, sediment, and/or fish and wildlife populations sampling data) 
– Experience performing scientific or technical writing tasks 
– Use of standard office software products such as Excel, Access, PowerPoint, MS Word. 

Preferred:
– Experience with ArcGIS. 
– Experience interpreting State of Wisconsin water regulations and requirements. 
– Experience with Great Lakes Program, which may include Remedial Action Plans and Lakewide Management Action Plans, etc. 
– Good personal communication skills.
