Water Resources Hydrologist
Permanent and Full Time (37 hours per week)
Salary £28,125 – £29,636
Location: at our Wallingford site, hybrid working with 50% of your time on site

If so, the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH) is looking for an enthusiastic person to join its Water Resources Systems Group, researching and applying hydrological models in the UK and internationally. 

We are seeking a  Hydrologist to help UKCEH deliver scientific evidence to underpin integrated water management approaches and assist in the development of decision-support tools for governments and agencies across the world. Within the role, there will be an opportunity to  develop broad hydrological expertise with a specialisation in water resources modelling.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Applying a range of hydrological models and quantifying their uncertainty in data-scarce situations
  • Integrating water demands with other research areas such as ecology and water quality
  • Applying water quality models under a range of climate change scenarios
  • Developing tools to manipulate/analyse large datasets
  • Contributing to  the production of reports and scientific papers detailing major research findings

Essential Skills, Knowledge & Qualifications

  • A good degree in physical/environmental sciences, maths or engineering
  • Understands the importance of knowledge transfer and has ideas on how to contribute to this
  • Good IT skills with experience in one or more of GIS, Microsoft SQL server, Access databases and Excel, with an ability to programme in FORTRAN, Python, R or VB

  • Able to work independently and manages own time effectively
  • Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability
  • Makes active contributions and provides support to other team members

Skills

  • Understands the wider context of scientific area
  • Keeps up to date with peer literature & thinking in scientific area
  • Scientifically numerate and with good mathematical skills 
  • Knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of environmental modelling, with some experience in applying mechanistic models
  • Knowledge and understanding of the principles of hydrology and water resources management
  • Experience of working on applied hydrology projects in the consultancy or research sector

Desirable Skills

  • Understands the importance of budgetary control and value for money
  • Experience of working on applied hydrology projects in the consultancy or research sector
  • Able to talk about work undertaken to non-specialists
  • Has developed effective scientific writing skills
  • Experience of machine learning
  • Ability to programme in FORTRAN, Python, R or VB

Other Requirements

  • Ability to travel to study sites in the UK and internationally (desirable only)
