Masters thesis: Determination of the bathymetry of Peruvian lakes from satellite data

DLR (German Aerospace Center)

Cologne, Germany 🇩🇪

Starting date: 1 April 2023

Duration of contract: 6 months

Remuneration: Up to the German TVöD 5

Type of employment: Part-time

Your mission:

Together with the German Remote Sensing Data Center, the Remote Sensing Technology Institute forms DLR’s Earth Observation Center – the competence center for Earth observation in Germany.

In order to better estimate the availability of water in Peru in the future, the Peruvian water authority ANA, in cooperation with DLR, wants to create more accurate maps of water depth (bathymetry) with the help of satellite data. Water depth can be determined in shallow water from calibrated multispectral data, since the penetration depth of light into water depends on wavelength.

The master thesis will compare the suitability of different satellites (PlanetScope, Sentinel-2, Landsat-8/9) and subsequently derive the bathymetry of several lakes. The work also includes an experimental part: Together with DLR colleagues, you will participate in an international measurement campaign on lakes in Peru lasting several weeks and help to collect measurement data that will be used to adapt the data analysis software to the Peruvian lakes and to validate the satellite data.

Your qualifications:

  • Geosciences, environmental sciences or comparable studies
  • Willingness to participate in a measurement campaign in Peru in June/July 2023 (costs covered by DLR)

Your benefits:

Look forward to a fulfilling job with an employer who appreciates your commitment and supports your personal and professional development. Our unique infrastructure offers you a working environment in which you have unparalleled scope to develop your creative ideas and accomplish your professional objectives. Our human resources policy places great value on a healthy family and work-life-balance as well as equal opportunities for persons of all genders (f/m/x). Individuals with disabilities will be given preferential consideration in the event their qualifications are equivalent to those of other candidates.
