FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
Brooklyn College of the City University of New York (CUNY) invites applications for a full-time, tenured Associate Professor position in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences whose research focuses on Climate and Environment and who will serve as Director of the Aquatic Research and Environmental Assessment Center with a starting date in August 2023.
The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (EESC) conducts research and teaching across the full spectrum of the earth and environmental sciences to help students navigate the rocks, soils, landscapes, coastlines, and waters of New York City and beyond. Furthermore, our many external partnerships allow students to apply learned skills outside the classroom and address pressing questions and problems related to Earth systems and our environment. Our faculty and students have strong collaborative relationships with the Science Resilience Institute at Jamaica Bay (srijb.org), Aquatic Research and Environmental Assessment Center (AREAC, Aquatic Research and Environmental Assessment Center (AREAC) | Brooklyn College (cuny.edu) ), CUNY Advanced Sciences Research Center Environmental Sciences Initiative ( Environmental Sciences – The Advanced Science Research Center (cuny.edu) , as well as the Urban Sustainability Program ( Urban Sustainability | Brooklyn College (cuny.edu ) at Brooklyn College. The Department offers BS, MA, BAT, MS, MA and MAT degrees, while the PhD program is offered through CUNY Graduate Center.
AREAC is a 15,000-square-foot facility dedicated to basic and applied studies of aquatic organisms and the environments they inhabit. The 10,000-square-foot saltwater area is a re-circulating seawater system, allowing control of temperature, salinity, and photoperiod. There is also a separate 3,000-square-foot lab for growing and experimentation of freshwater organisms. A 2,000-square-foot adjacent lab is equipped for water quality and various analyses, including morphology, immunochemistry, molecular biology, and biochemical assays.

Responsibilities include:
- Serve as Director for the Aquatic Research and Environmental Center (AREAC)
- Lead a multidisciplinary group of faculty and researchers associated with AREAC to develop externally funded, independent and/or collaborative research
- Oversee a $2.5 million renovation of AREAC facilities.
- Engage in community engagement work, in collaboration with SRIJB, EESC, ASRC, Urban Sustainability Program.
- Teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in climate and/or environmental sciences
- Mentor graduate and undergraduate research
Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum
- Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences or related field from an accredited institution
- Demonstrated research and funding excellence
- Ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams
- Ability to teach undergraduate or graduate courses
- Ability to teach evening, weekends, face-to-face, and online
Preferred
- Potential for excellence in teaching, including online teaching, and in scholarship.
- Track record of developing sustainable externally-funded community-based research and collaborations in urban settings
COMPENSATION
$76,395 – $117,805; Salary commensurate with experience and credentials.
