Local recruitment: Conservation Officer

Eden Rivers Trust

Penrith, Cumbria, UK 🇬🇧

Salary Band  £25,000- £31,633 pa, plus pension

Full time, permanent

Location: Penrith, Cumbria

Could you be our new Conservation Officer, joining our dynamic and growing team of river conservationists to help deliver positive environmental change in partnership with farmers, landowners and the water industry?

Agriculture dominates the landscape in the beautiful Eden valley that our rivers flow through. By working closely with farm businesses, we believe that together we can make a significant difference to river health. As an independent river conservation charity, we have a long and successful track record of providing advice to local farmers on water-friendly farming initiatives that help to ensure that Eden’s rivers can support a brighter future for all.

You will build on these existing relationships to help coordinate farmer cluster groups whose members will work together to improve water quality and management across the catchment. It’s your chance to use your knowledge of water and habitat improvement measures to provide practical farm advice that works for both the environment and the farm business.

This role offers a great opportunity to work on environmental projects from start to finish; from undertaking initial walkovers to identify water quality and habitat improvements to working closely with farmers, landowners, and the water industry to see them through to fruition.

The role in a nutshell

In this varied role within the Farming and Catchment Management team, you will:

  • Work on environmental projects from start to finish, including:
    • Carrying out walkovers to identify water quality improvement measures on farms,
    • Working with farmers and contractors to agree and implement these schemes, and
  • Help increase the knowledge and use of water-friendly farming practices that will help improve water quality in the Eden catchment, reduce the impact of pollution and improve habitat by:
    • Coordinating farmer cluster groups to provide water-friendly farming training and advice,
    • Provide advice to support strategic programmes such as the Eden Catchment Plan and Endangered Landscape programme.

About us

Enhancing and protecting the river environment so that people and nature in Cumbria can thrive is at the heart of our work. By rethinking rivers for good, we are changing conversations, finding ways to work smarter and inspiring and empowering others to do the best for our rivers. We believe in partnership, creativity and flexibility, and we are rooted in the Eden – working at ground level with local communities, land managers and businesses.

The Eden catchment has it all: national parks on your doorstep, high mountains, lush valleys and iconic lakes and rivers; it’s where farming underpins the local culture and economy, and you’ll be based at our office in the heart of the catchment, in Penrith.

It’s a place where you can make a real impact. Our rivers are designated a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and SSSI but are in unfavourable condition due to the declining state of nature; poor water quality; increasing flood risk and uncertainty around the future of upland agriculture.
