Job description

It’s an exciting time to be working on water resources management. The pressures of climate change and population growth mean that it will become even more challenging to allocate this precious resource between different uses in the future while protecting and enhancing the water environment.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated, and forward-thinking individual with excellent communication skills and knowledge of environmental pressures.

This post is a specialist water resources technical role. The post holder will:

jointly be responsible for the local delivery of water resources services

directly support the Water Industry National Environment Programme (WINEP) and associated water company plans.

build and maintain productive and influential relationships with internal and external customers including water companies

contribute to the coordination of drought planning

lead and/or provide specialist advice to local and national working groups and projects

provide specialist advice to senior managers with facilitating resolution of complex or contentious issues

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents, or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.

The team

You’ll join the Integrated Environment Planning (IEP) team, containing specialists in water resources, water quality and catchment planning, working across the Thames Area. We’re a team of experienced advisors central to environmental decision making, delivering integrated actions to maximise benefits for people and wildlife.

We work with internal and external partners to collate, analyse and share data, providing the environmental evidence to inform our area’s priorities.

Experience/skills required

You will need experience in the following areas:-

knowledge and experience of strategic water resource environment planning tools and techniques, and their outputs, to support decision making

using data management, analysis and presentation skills to explore innovative solutions that will bring environmental improvement

building productive and influential relationships with internal and external partners, using strong communication and networking skills to influence or help deliver outcomes

translating guidance and instructions into local delivery

ability to work under own initiative, and as part of a larger, cross-functional team, prioritising and delivering work to relevant standards and tight deadlines

good organisational skills/discipline and the ability to plan, track, deliver and evaluate own work and other projects so project management experience would be desirable

ability to coach and mentor others to increase experience and resilience within the environment planning community
