About You
Humanitarian engineering has become a part of most engineering programs.  This continuing academic role will work with a team of committed cross-disciplinary staff to make a meaningful contribution to 1) increasing the humanitarian impact of research completed in the School of Engineering, 2) empowering students to solve humanitarian challenges through engineering and, 3) building a community of students, academics, and industry partners passionate about humanitarian impact. 

As a Lecturer, the successful applicant will be responsible for carrying-out teaching, research, and administrative activities of relevance to humanitarian engineering and Environmental Engineering.  The lecturer is responsible for carrying out teaching activities within undergraduate, Masters and Graduate Diploma programs and for maintaining and advancing their scholarly, research and/or professional capabilities.

The Lecturer is expected to contribute to the teaching in the discipline and to the humanitarian engineering courses and programs that are being rolled out across the school; the Lecturer may be responsible for course coordination. Working with organisations, such as Engineers Without Borders (EWB), the successful applicant will create authentic experiential learning opportunities for students consistent with the strategic goals of the School and the University.

The lecturer is expected to undertake high quality research, with a focus on humanitarian topics e.g. social justice, poverty alleviation, disaster prepares and response, international development, participatory methods, humanitarian engineering education etc. The lecturer should effectively engage with PhD students, appropriate communities, and relevant industries both nationally and internationally to drive innovation and knowledge translation. 

The Lecturer is also expected to actively promote humanitarian engineering by establishing and maintaining memberships, links, and partnerships with academic, industry and professional communities.  The Lecturer is expected to work collaboratively and collegially with fellow academics within the teaching team, and update colleagues and students on developments.

The successful applicant will hold a PhD (or equivalent) in an appropriate field, have excellent interpersonal and communications skills as well as the ability to work collaboratively and collegially within a culturally diverse environment.

To be successful in this position, you’ll have as a minimum:

  • Demonstrated teaching / research / industry experience and expertise related to the application of engineering in humanitarian contexts. This may include experience and expertise in disaster preparedness, mitigation, and response, working in complex contexts such as informal settlements or refugee settings as well as long term development, it may also include working with marginalised or vulnerable communities. The primary application of engineering will be for social justice and poverty alleviation and / or the provision of essential services such as water, sanitation, hygiene, clean cooking, energy, shelter and settlement, food security and nutrition, health, amongst others. 
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, prepare, deliver, and otherwise coordinate courses and / or manage programs at undergraduate and post-graduate levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out academic administration and perform the full academic responsibilities for the coordination of an award program, year or course.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop high-quality curriculum and course materials at undergraduate and post-graduate levels including for online delivery.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead the development of innovative approaches to course delivery and student-centered learning that successfully exploits new technologies, with a commitment to continuous quality improvement through ongoing training and development.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake research in the area of humanitarian and environmental engineering which will contribute to School research areas evidenced by an excellent research track record in publications, development of new research initiatives, competitive research funding, establishing industry links and building research teams.
  • Experience (or demonstrated ability) to supervise Masters and PhD research candidates to completion.
  • Demonstrated ability to generate alternative funding projects through effective liaison with government and industry or philanthropic organisations.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work effectively and sensitively within a culturally diverse environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills appropriate for interacting with students, staff and industry, together with a strong commitment to teamwork and multidisciplinary collaboration.
  • Must have high level English language skills, both written and oral
