PostDoc position in Biodiversity Implementation (80-100%)

Municipalities are important actors in the promotion and protection of biodiversity. With targeted attention to biodiversity concerns in spatial planning and building permit procedures, as well as in the wise management of their own facilities, cities and municipalities can create and maintain biodiversity-rich settlements. Several large cities offer good examples of this. However, little is known about the challenges and opportunities in medium-sized Swiss municipalities in creating biodiversity-rich settlements.

This postdoctoral project explores implementation practices to understand the conditions, actors and resources, as well as leverage points in creating biodiversity-rich settlements. You will conduct case study research in selected medium-sized Swiss cities. You will use interviews and document analysis to develop an in-depth, multi-layered understanding of complex local biodiversity implementation practices. You will publish your findings in scientific and applied journals and present them at national and international conferences. Your workplace will be at WSL and EAWAG.

The successful candidate should have a PhD in environmental sciences, governance studies, human geography or a related field. We are looking for candidates with good skills in qualitative social science research and an interest in biodiversity and local governance. A good publication record in relation to your career stage completes your profile. We welcome applications from people who have a good command of English and German, while knowledge of another national language is an advantage. You are interested in developing innovative, problem-oriented and pragmatic research and are motivated to work in an interdisciplinary working environment at the interface between science and practice.

Applications must be submitted by 20 February 2023.
