About the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering

The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering brings together engineers who deliver teaching and research excellence in the sustainable design, planning, construction and operation of infrastructure and resource management to solve societal challenges and support more liveable communities.

We design and improve infrastructure to address real-world challenges such as overpopulation, natural disasters and climate change, and shape the world we live in by engineering liveable and sustainable environments with safe, efficient and reliable infrastructure.

Our teams are actively engaged in research and teaching in the areas of infrastructure, environmental engineering, and civil construction with key strengths including:

  • urban water management
  • climate change adaptation
  • disaster management
  • infrastructure resilience
  • structural heath monitoring
  • fire safety engineering
  • transport systems
  • resilient pavements

Our research is supported by deep industry connections that enable translation of our cutting-edge research into real-world outcomes. We have a highly capable higher degree research student body, with over 80 students engaged in MPhil and PhD programs.

The School’s research is well aligned with the University’s real-world positioning, through better partnerships across internal and external boundaries. Our researchers study the natural, built and virtual environments to find ways to make them more sustainable, secure and resilient. Our School also has ties with major QUT research centres, including the Centre for Data Science, Centre for Materials Science and Centre for Agriculture and Bioeconomy.
