Position Title: Agricultural Specialist III – NREM Watershed Ecology

Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of related experience

Preferred Qualifications:

M.S. degree in Agronomy, Environmental Science, or related agricultural or environmental discipline.
Valid U.S. Driver’s License
Experience related to field agricultural research in U.S. corn belt.
Experience with establishment and management of edge-of-field conservation practices such as saturated buffers and bioreactors.
Skill in operating farm equipment such as tractors, mowers, soil sampling coring probe.
Experience installing, maintaining, and operating water quality monitoring equipment.
Experience implementing research protocols, and collecting research data.
Experience with water and soil sampling collection and processing in accordance with established quality control/quality assurance protocols.

Job Description:

Summary
Manages all aspects of a research project related to edge-of-field water quality. They will coordinate field research related to water quality, soils, and structures and assist with demonstration and field day activities. Work may include overseeing field research studies, implementing research protocols, and collecting research data. This position may supervise undergraduate students in conducting research, and may provide assistance to graduate students with research projects.

  • Manages and coordinates a set of agricultural resources.
  • Implements research protocols.
  • Contributes to experimental design, management, and analysis.
  • Consults with project leaders on experiments, protocol, and progress.
  • Monitors and oversees machinery and property maintenance and repair.
  • Assists with field operations. Observes, diagnoses, and remedies livestock/crop problems.
  • Manages established network of saturated buffer and bioreactor water quality monitoring sites.
  • Coordinates with project partners on the establishment of new edge-of-field water quality monitoring sites

This is a two year term position with opportunity for renewal

• Senior-level position possessing high-level professional and/or technical skills working independently under minimal supervision to support ISU’s mission and department or work unit goals
• Applies senior-level professional knowledge and expertise to work requiring greater latitude
• Solves moderately complex problems and regularly exercises judgment to determine appropriate action
• Regularly exercises judgment to resolve problems and determine appropriate action on a broad set of issue and problems. May provide recommendations regarding problems/issues outside the bounds of defined procedures and practices
• Responds to complicated inquiries, provides training, and provides direction to lower-level staff
• May provide supervision for one to two other staff (i.e., leads a small work team)
• May lead projects for which well-defined practices and procedures may not exist
• Provides guidance to students
