Position Summary:

Reporting to the Vice President of Community Engagement and Communications, the Director of the Salazar Rio Grande del Norte Center at Adams State University is expected to: plan, organize, develop and as needed, fundraiser (via individual donations, sponsorships, and grants) for both current and future.

Initiatives of the Center. These include:

1) The Water Education Initiative which develops and promotes water education programs for both students and the San Luis Valley community at large, including but not limited to:

โ— Water Studies Minor degree courses and related field and seminar courses

โ— annual Rio Grande State of the Basin Symposium

โ— expert talks and other programs for the campus and community on various water issues

โ— development of a Rio Grande library concept

โ— water policy related programs for the community such as โ€œGrowing Water Smartโ€

โ— collaboration with local, state, and federal interests

The Director will maintain a Water Education Advisory Committee of local experts and participate with community partners on water related initiatives, policy discussions, and educational opportunities.

2) The Rio Grande Natural Area Initiative which works and participates with Adams State faculty and programs as well as community partners to:

โ— organize and support a Steering Committee for this area

โ— develop opportunities for student and community cultural, environmental, recreational and other educational programs, including field programs

โ— promote community engagement with this unique and special reach of the Rio Grande in the southern San Luis Valley.

โ— Promote economic development based on the natural resources along the Rio Grande Corridor while protecting the riparian areas

Preserve the history of the San Luis Valley and the role that water has played it its economic development. The successful candidate will be innovative, . strategic, entrepreneurial, and share a commitment to the mission and values of the Salazar Center and Adams State. individual should be a strong leader
and innovator to both develop and implement the opportunities of these initiatives to engage Adams State with the community. They should possess the energy and creative ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, manage and raise funds, and develop opportunities for Adams State to contribute to the vital future of water and the greater Rio Grande Natural Area in the San Luis Valley community, along with meaningful educational opportunities and career development for students.

Specific Job Duties (Essential Functions and Responsibilities)

Programmatic:

โ— Lead and participate in the development, planning, implementation, promotion and administration of the Water Studies Minor and related special field programs and seminars.

โ— Develop and sustain communications with a Salazar Center Water Education Advisory Committee.

โ— Participate in the network of local, regional and state organizations to remain informed and able to engage in timely opportunities to improve and develop organizational programs. This includes attending related meetings and, when appropriate, serving on a variety of committees providing
guidance, research, and recommendations related to San Luis Valley program related issues.

โ— Build strategic partnerships with the Academic Departments, Student Services, faculty, members of the community, and local and regional water leaders to sustain working relationships that identify opportunities for the Salazar Center to convene, host, develop and implement contributing programs

โ— Serve as a resource for academic departments regarding Salazar Center programs.

โ— Write, produce and disseminate timely communications re Salazar Center programs and events and related issues. Maintain social media presence and updated website in conjunction with Adams State communications personnel.

โ— Develop ideas for enhancement of the Rio Grande Corridor in the Rio Grande natural area which will lead to the improvement of conditions on the riparian areas and work with governmental and private organization to develop and implement projects.

Financial and Personnel:

โ— Work with Adams State colleagues to secure financial support from individuals, foundations and grant sources to maintain position salary and build long term endowment for the Salazar Center.

โ— Responsible for identifying, writing and securing funding through grants, and other fundraising events as well as compliance with terms and conditions of grants, agreements, and donations.

โ— Supervise, train, motivate, and evaluate Work Study student(s) as available. Represent the University at community and outside organization functions including University events,

โ— Maintain effective and strong work relationships with members of the community, the student population, and University faculty and staff

โ— Perform related duties as assigned

Salary and Benefits:

The expected full time salary equivalent is $60,000-$75,000, commensurate with education and experience. Adams State University offers a competitive

Minimum Qualifications:

โ— Five (5) years of progressively responsible leadership, academic or work experience in community organizing, natural resources, conservation, water, cultural and equity issues.

Preferred Qualifications:

โ— Academic and work related experience relevant to position;

โ— Personal experience with the San Luis Valley community that would support community engagement;

โ— Understanding of cultural and diversity issues relevant to a Hispanic Serving
Institution;

โ— Knowledge of both water and cultural issues relevant to the Salazar Centerโ€™s core Initiatives;

โ— Bilingual written and spoken, English/Spanish;

โ— Credentials to teach in the Water Studies Minor. Highly Preferred Qualifications:

โ— Management and development experience in academics and the nonprofit sector (preferable) or the governmental or private sectors.

โ— Background and success in an appropriate field, such as natural resources, water, cultural, sociology, anthropology, history, or other relevant education, plus at least four (4) years professional experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

โ— Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

โ— Demonstrated skills in identifying, soliciting, procuring and managing grants, donations, in-kind services and equipment, and leveraging resources from individual, private, corporate, foundations and government sources.

โ— Strong skills in public relations, consensus building, facilitation and motivational techniques to support partnerships and collaboration with diverse interests.

โ— Ability to work independently and professionally, establish and achieve work priorities for themselves and as possible, students, work study students, volunteers and partners.

โ— Have a strong work ethic, and be energetic and flexible.

โ— Ability to attend regularly scheduled work-related meetings and to occasionally attend multi-day conferences, work evenings and weekends.
