The Environment and Heritage Group within DPE has an opportunity for a Senior Floodplain Officer to provide technical and policy advice to local councils and internal and external stakeholders in the effective management of floodplain programs and delivery of hazard studies and plans to manage flood risks.

About You

Our Senior Floodplain Officer provides expert technical and policy advice to support local councils effectively deliver floodplain risk management projects under the NSW Floodplain Management Program. You will contribute to project scoping, planning, implementation and their ongoing management to address program priorities and review their ongoing effectiveness in meeting relevant government and corporate objectives.

You will provide expert technical advice to Council Floodplain Risk Management Committees and other stakeholders in the preparation of Flood Studies, Floodplain Management Studies and Floodplain Management Plans and their effective implementation. You will assist with monitoring and assessment of grant funded projects and facilitate state government funding assistance for local councils within the North-East Region. You will play an active role in ensuring effective floodplain risk management practices are promoted in State Significant Development and planning proposals.

Essential Requirements 

  • A Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering or Environmental Engineering from a recognised higher education institution and eligibility for membership to Engineers Australia.
  • A valid Australian (NSW) Driver’s License as the role requires travel.
  • Sound knowledge of floodplain risk assessment methods and floodplain management strategies.
  • A demonstrated understanding of hydrologic and hydraulic models and their application in the analysis of flood behaviour and flood hazards.
