Climate Scientist, Senior

Key Role:

Support federal agencies with climate change adaptation experience to enhance the protection of critical infrastructure, particularly in the water sector. Provide support in developing and implementing practical tools, training, and resources needed to support drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater utility managers, as well as other water sector decision-makers, with emphasis on adaptive management approaches to address climate change impacts. Assist agencies in helping water sector entities assess climate change vulnerabilities, develop and implement adaptation measures, engage and educate stakeholders, and share lessons learned. Provide review, analysis, and technical assistance and project management support related to the array of climate change impacts affecting the Nation’s water sector, as well as the adaptive and potentially mitigative countermeasures entities could undertake, in accordance with CWA and SDWA. Support the dissemination of guidance and information related to the understanding of climate change impacts, adaptation, and mitigation measures within the water sector. Support updates to climate tools and resources. Support the coordination of outreach and forums with stakeholders concerning climate change impacts. Provide expert and detailed virtual or in-person workshop training on climate impacts, as well as tools and resources to Water Sector utilities and stakeholders. Provide detailed virtual or in-person risk assessment technical assistance, including project management support, and workshops to Water Sector utilities, local communities, and stakeholders. 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Experience with ESRI/GIS data maps, including federal standards for hosting and publishing geospatial data services 
  • Experience with federal statutes, Presidential Orders, and policies affecting climate change adaption for water infrastructure and resources
  • Ability to support updates and create enhancements for web-based climate tools and federal standards for hosting and publishing web applications
  • Ability to obtain a security clearance
  • Bachelor’s degree and 14+ years of experience in climate change adaption or Master’s degree and 12+ years of experience in climate change adaption

Additional Qualifications:

  • Experience in the areas of water resources and impacts on water and wastewater systems preferred
  • Experience with climate change projections, models, and emission scenarios related to global temperature increase, precipitation changes, evapotranspiration, runoff, the net impacts of increased atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations, and sea-level rise
  • Experience with work being conducted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the U.S. Global Change Research Program, and the National Climate Assessment
  • Possession of excellent analysis, client support, and presentation skills
  • Possession of excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Climate Science, Environmental Science, Geology, or Meteorology preferred; Master’s degree in Climate Science, Environmental Science, Geology, or Meteorology a plus
