Job Description:

The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), is recruiting one Hydrologic/Fisheries Technician for the Southern Nevada Fish and Wildlife Office. This position would provide field and office support to biologists in the Ecological Services (ES) and National Wildlife Refuge System (Refuges) branches.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Conducting weekly sampling of Cottonwood Spring on the Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge (NWR), Lincoln County, Nevada. This work will include collecting water quality data, shipping/handling water quality data, calibrating multiparameter sondes, conducting QA/QC of data, reporting, and maintaining water quality database.
  • Developing outreach material for native fishes and nonnative aquatic species in Pahranagat Valley.
  • Assisting ES biologists with recovery work for threatened and endangered species.
  • Assisting Refuge biologists at the Pahranagat NWR.
  • Participating in surveys for sensitive and listed species.
  • Drafting summary reports and presenting monitoring activities at recovery implementation team meetings.
  • Working cooperatively with federal, state, and private partners.
  • Coordinating volunteer work projects and activities with partners.

Contract Timeline:

  • 75 week appointment beginning January 1st 2023
  • Full time (40 hours/week)

Location:

The Pahranagat NWR is a protected wildlife refuge, at the southern end of Pahranagat Valley, located 90 miles north of the city of Las Vegas. The Pahranagat NWR is a refuge for many species of wildlife and plants, and serves as a water source for north/south migrating birds.
In addition to the scenic desert beauty at the Refuge, there are several other recreation and natural setting opportunities to explore close by, such as, Death Valley National Park, Mojave National Preserve, Joshua Tree National Park, Spring Mountains National Recreation Area, Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, and Lake Mead National Recreation Area. These areas are within a few hours driving distance and afford a variety of outdoor activities ranging from hiking, mountain biking and rock climbing to fishing, boating and skiing/snowboarding.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • $22/hour
  • Onsite housing is available at Pahranagat NWR. Technician could elect to live in Las Vegas though no housing or stipend is available for this option.
  • Camping Per Diem: $25/day
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance available at no cost

Job Qualifications:

Technical requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology (wildlife or conservation), wildlife ecology or management, or related field, preferably in the field of fishery biology;
  • Familiarity and experience with standard fisheries management approaches and techniques, such as water quality sampling, development of outreach material for fish and nonnative species, and some fisheries fieldwork (e.g., snorkel surveys, minnow trapping).
  • Familiarity with and interest in the ecology of aquatic desert habitat and associated resource management issues;
  • Experience in collecting data accurately and completely and entering data correctly into a computer system;
  • Ability to use GPS units to record and locate points and to record field data;

Additional requirements:

  • Possess a valid, state-issued driver’s license and clean driving record;
  • Ability to safely drive a 4WD vehicle on unimproved roads;
  • Ability to work productively, consistently and cooperatively as part of a team to accomplish mutual goals;
  • Possess strong organizational skills;
  • Ability to communicate clearly and efficiently with the public, coworkers, and Technical Advisors both orally and in writing, and respond in a professional manner to inquiries from the public regarding work activities;
  • Ability to safely conduct strenuous fieldwork requiring regular physical exertion including hiking on uneven terrain;
