UKCEH is looking for a Hydrologist with modelling experience to join our 600-strong team, contributing to scientific discovery and generating the data, insights and solutions that researchers, businesses and governments need to solve complex environmental challenges.

You’ll be joining our Hydro-climate Risks Science Area, supporting the development of UK Flood Estimation Handbook methods as part of the Flood Estimation Team and Hydrological Forecasting Group. You will address key research questions and policy needs for effective flood risk management in a changing world.

Your main responsibilities will include:  

  • Developing next-generation Flood Estimation Handbook (FEH) methods to support a wide range of flood estimation-based projects 
  • Novel analysis of hydrometeorological and climate data  
  • Innovative statistical modelling of environmental change, and modelling ecosystem multi-functional benefits of nature-based solutions.  

Projects you’ll be working on: 

  • Creating a state-of-the-art archive of flood events for the hydrological community as part of the Hydro-JULES UKRI project, 
  • Hydrological assessment of urban Nature-Based Solutions for urban planning using Ecosystem Service toolkit applications as part of a multi-disciplinary EU-funded project, 
  • Updating industry standard methods for UK Flood Estimation.  

For the role of Hydrologist, we’re looking for somebody with: 

  • A PhD in a numerate environmental science subject or relevant post graduate experience  
  • 2:1 degree in an environmental/numerate discipline 
  • Proven ability of working with environmental data to develop a new understanding of environmental processes/systems  
  • Experience in developing and applying a model of hydrological/environmental system  
  • Understanding of how to apply GIS software for data visualisation and analysis  
  • Proven experience in programming language, preferably R or/and Python  
  • Demonstratable understanding of the importance of data quality and method assumptions 
  • Hydrological science understanding
