JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Join a Leading Team Focused on Physics-Informed Machine Learning and Deep Learning as an Assistant Research Professor in Computational Hydrology at The Pennsylvania State University.

The Pennsylvania State University is seeking applications for a Assistant Research Professor position in the field of computational hydrology, with a focus on physics-informed machine learning and deep learning. The successful candidate will work on cutting-edge research in hydrology, collaborating with Dr. Shen and other faculty members, while contributing to the supervision of graduate students and the development of grants and research projects.

Research Focus:

  • Physics-informed machine learning applied to hydrology.
  • Deep learning methods for advanced hydrological modeling at the national scale.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop and implement numerical solutions for differential equations related to hydrology.
  • Apply physics-informed machine learning techniques to enhance hydrological modeling accuracy and efficiency.
  • Stay current with the latest developments and be willing to learn and adopt frontier methods.
  • Collaborate with research team members to design, execute, and interpret research findings.
  • Contribute to the development of high-quality research publications and presentations.
  • Assist Dr. Shen in developing and submitting grant proposals to secure research funding.
  • Mentor and supervise graduate students within the department.

Requirements:

The Assistant Research Professor should possess a terminal degree or its equivalent in an academic field related to their research. Alternatively, the Assistant Research Professor without a terminal degree should possess at least a master’s degree or its equivalent in an academic field related to his/her teaching specialization; must have demonstrated ability as a researcher; and must have shown evidence of professional growth and scholarship in their discipline. A Ph.D. in hydrology, civil engineering, environmental science, or a closely related field is preferred.

The successful candidate will also have:

  • A strong background in numerical modeling and the application of computational methods to hydrological problems.
  • Demonstrated research experience with a track record of published work in relevant scientific journals.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in programming languages, such as Python or Fortran.
  • Solid understanding of the physical hydrologic cycle.

This is a term appointment for 2 years with an excellent possibility of renewal.
