Summary

The Senior Hydrologist provides technical support to NYPA Engineering Services in the planning, phasing and implementation of design and construction work. This may include but not be limited to review of hydraulic/hydrologic studies, calculations, plans, specifications, input on operations, coordination of work sequencing and other assistance as requested. #LI-AE1

Responsibilities

  • Provide hydro flow and energy generation forecasts for the Niagara and St. Lawrence projects for use by Financial planning and ERM departments and provides technical support to the Utility Operations, ECC, operating projects, Canal Corporation and other internal and external stakeholders.
  • Implement best practices processes and tools in flow forecasting and water management
  • Represent NYPA interests regarding public policy as to water management
  • Develop and maintain software modeling programs for BG, Niagara, STL and Jarvis and other projects as needed
  • Develop monthly long-range hydro flow, resulting generation, and load forecasts for the Niagara and Saint Lawrence projects. 
  • Provide support for the Niagara Optimization Program which is used by the Energy Control Center control room operators and by the traders in generation resource management
  • Prepare monthly probabilistic forecasts for the hydro shortfall, hydro revenue, Niagara water transfers and the risk for low Niagara generation
  • Collect, store, maintain and evaluate data from monthly precipitation events and Great Lakes basin supply and water levels
  • Collaborate with data sharing with iSOC, including forecasts, MesoNet and Emergency Management
  • Develop hydro shortfall forecasts and interruptible customer forecasts for use by the Marketing department
  • Present hydro forecasts and shortfalls to NYPA’s customers, executive management and to Marketing and Economic Development. Evaluate and implement enhancements to the hydro model to improve accuracy of water and energy production forecasts.
  • Manage on a biweekly basis the Hinckley reservoir discharges and resulting water release at the Jarvis small hydro facility
  • Conduct hydrologic studies as needed to support relicensing efforts.
  • Represent the Authority before outside agencies including the IJC, GLERL, NWS, NERFC and  SEMO
  • Provide technical support to the Canal Corporation

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Detailed knowledge of hydro-electricity, at both run-of-the-river and pumped storage generation level
  • Organized, self-motivated, strong analytic skills
  • Extensive knowledge in hydrology and hydroelectric modeling
  • Strong mathematical background in probability, statistics, numerical analysis and analysis of variance
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, and Database programming and querying using SQL, MS Access, VBA, SAS and Oracle
  • Ability to formulate presentations and effectively communicate technical methods and results
  • Detailed experience and skill in modeling both stochastic and deterministic programming and processes
  • Ability to understand hydrologic/hydraulic concepts and apply advanced mathematical techniques to devise solutions to hydro operating proposals

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Hydrology or related discipline.
  • Master’s Degree in Engineering or Hydrology or related discipline, preferred
  • Minimum 10 years of demonstrated experience, and strongly utilized analytical skills with an emphasis in the electric utility industry.
  • Basic knowledge of NYPA’s unique generating assets and of the NYISO.
  • Experience with risk optimization software such as Microsoft Excel and Solver plus knowledge required.
  • NYS Professional Engineer registration preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Limited travel (about 10%) required primarily to NYPA generating and Canal facilities
