Duties

  • Prepare project proposals and develop/implement work plans and protocols to include consideration of previous experimental and theoretical analyses, evaluation of available data, and development and adaptation of procedures/methods of investigation.
  • Serve as principal contact with cooperating agencies in the identification, design, planning, and conduct of water-resources investigations.
  • Develop and lead specialized training for diverse audiences from the general public to senior scientists.
  • Develop designs and implement work plans for landscape-level projects to restore watersheds and improve water quality.
  • Work on complex or controversial water issues whose solutions require a proven understanding of hydrology and one or more related disciplines such as hydraulics, geology, ecology, geochemistry, and the complexities of ground or surface water flow.

Qualifications

In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements – please be sure to include this information in your resume. No assumptions will be made about your experience.

In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by at least two of the following examples: Serving as a project leader or senior project member for completing hydrologic investigations by planning, conducting, and reporting on interpretive studies. Collecting, interpreting, analyzing, and evaluating hydrologic data. Planning, performing, coordinating, and directing comprehensive hydrologic studies of hydrologic systems in accordance with and applicable authorizations, policy, and regulatory requirements. Developing, utilizing, and maintaining comprehensive models to conduct and simulate hydrologic analysis and inform operations. Developing and implementing landscape-level projects to restore watersheds, improve water quality, protect federal water rights, and protect Wild & Scenic Rivers.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands: Work is in the office and in the field. Field work requires physical exertion such as long periods of standing, considerable walking, stooping, bending, crouching, crawling, and climbing. It requires walking long distances over rough terrain carrying a backpack and/or equipment up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment: Work involves regular and recurring exposure to moderate risks, discomforts, and unpleasantness such as: travel in small aircraft and water craft; high winds and low or high temperatures; bears and other dangerous animals; and adverse weather conditions.

Education

This position has a positive education requirement which requires that you have a degree in physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours in physics. Calculus and physics, as described above, are requirements for all grade levels, or a combination of education and experience—courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
