The University of Eastern Finland is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher or Doctoral Researcher position in environmental social science, especially responsive and collaborative governance in restoration. Role and salary

UEF water research (UEF WATER) brings together researchers and research groups from various fields of science. The aims are to conduct research on a high international level and educate experts for water related fields. Furthermore, we aim to create an open innovation ecosystem, where stakeholders from the university, national research institutes, and water related businesses can meet and establish collaborative networks. We are seeking for a highly motivated and ambitious Postdoctoral Researcher / Doctoral Researcher to work in the Department of Geographical and Historical Studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies, on the Joensuu campus.

The primary goal of the doctoral/postdoctoral researcher is to explore collaborative approach (e.g., people-private-public partnerships) and their applicability in addressing restoration targets and reconciling conflicting interests. This requires understanding of the socio-political framing of restoration targets, but also action-oriented site-specific case study research involving local actors in knowledge co-creation. The position is suitable for competitive candidates with a strong background in action oriented social scientific research and familiarity working with actors in natural resource settings.

In this position you will co-operate with the other researchers working in the research group, reflecting that work to the modelling approaches to be developed for water management purposes. UEF water research program

The position will be filled for a fixed term, from 1 June 2023 (or starting date as agreed) for two years, due to it pertaining to tasks connected to UEF water research development. A probationary period is applied to all new members of the staff. 

The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system of the Finnish universities. The salary comprises two components: a job requirement component and a personal performance component. For a Postdoctoral Researcher, the job requirement component is 3,044.00 €/month, based on level 5 of the job requirement chart for teaching and research staff. The personal performance component ranges from a minimum of 6 % to a maximum of 50 % of the above-mentioned sum. Depending on the personal performance component, the salary will be approximately €3534–3717 per month at the beginning of the employment. For a Doctoral Researcher, the job requirement component is 2,108.40 – 2,628.85 €/month, based on levels 2 – 4 of the job requirement chart for teaching and research staff. Depending on the level of the job requirement component and personal performance component (6 % – 50 %), the salary will be approximately €2447­–3209 per month at the beginning of the employment. The salary of a Doctoral Researcher depends on the phase of the doctoral dissertation and postgraduate studies as well as personal performance.

Our requirements

  • The person to be appointed as Postdoctoral Researcher is required to hold a doctoral degree from an applicable field, which may not have been completed more than five years ago (dated first of June 2018 or later) at the time of accepting the position (a net period of time, which does not include parental leaves, military service etc.). The degree has to be completed by the end of the application period.
  • PhD students in the final stages of their doctoral studies, whose research and other merits complement their research expertise, may also be considered. In this case, the candidate shall be appointed to be a Doctoral Researcher.
  • Good command of the English and Finnish language is required.
