The purpose of the role is to contribute to annual data collection towards the high-profile Freshwater Ecosystem Health Monitoring Program. The successful applicant will experience the diversity of Southeast Queensland’s natural environment, from Rainbow Beach to the NSW border and to the top of the Great Dividing Range, taking the pulse of the waterways, learning new skills and being part of a dynamic team of ecological professionals undertaking vital work to help guide management of the region’s precious environmental resources. The position involves a combination of field, laboratory and office-based work, with an emphasis on fieldwork, and requires overnight travel away from Brisbane and work outside of normal office hours, e.g. up to 10-12 hours per day.

The Technical Officer, (TO2) is a role in which you will:
• Undertake extensive fieldwork throughout Southeast Queensland, including overnight stays.
• Collect, collate, enter, check and manipulate data in the field, laboratory and office with a high degree of accuracy.
• Prepare, maintain and work with equipment and consumables including 12V battery charging systems, pumps, electronic water quality meters, nets, backpack electrofishers and sundry field equipment.
• Calibrate and operate electronic meters and collect and count aquatic macroinvertebrates and fish in the field and laboratory.
• Assist in writing and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures, other operational documents and reports and undertake administrative duties associated with scientific research and monitoring, e.g. purchase of equipment and stores, completion of documents to satisfy Departmental requirements.
• Work efficiently; and maintain both a high level of personal and team safety, and scientific accuracy and integrity.
• Work under the direction of a more experienced staff member in a two-person field team within a tight-knit team of six.
• Foster a workplace culture that supports and promotes the interests of First Nations people and actively engage through our work to contribute to better outcomes for First Nations people.
We’ll assess your merit for this role by looking at what you’ve done previously – the knowledge, skills and experience you’ve built, your potential for development, and your personal qualities. This position requires:
• Ability to rapidly acquire skills to assist with backpack electrofishing and/or sampling of freshwater macroinvertebrates and/or measurements of the benthic metabolism of freshwater streams, including calibration, operation, deployment and maintenance of a range of electronic water quality equipment including water quality meters, 12 volt pumps and battery systems.
• Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate and legible records and files, both handwritten and digital.
• Demonstrated personal drive and integrity and ability to spend long periods outdoors in the field, often under arduous conditions and often staying away overnight between Monday and Friday.
• Ability to make a valuable contribution to a scientific team in the field of monitoring/research in aquatic ecology.
