WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER

The Policy Specialist provides research and policy analysis in support of The Nature Conservancy’s policy and/or corporate practice priorities and tracks policies and decisions that directly affect conservation goals, especially for the Ecuadorian Amazon. S/he builds and facilitates internal networks, coordinating meetings, agendas, and presentations.  S/he provides services that assist in influencing the outcome of policy and/or corporate initiatives at the international, country, sub-national, and local levels.   S/he develops strategic partnerships with relevant agencies, public institutions, private sector, conservation organizations, and industries to advance the organization’s conservation agenda. S/he also supports strategic analysis and communications for key partners and stakeholders. S/he applies specialist knowledge in evaluating existing policies. This position will report to Country Director in Ecuador and coordinate closely with Global Protect and the regional Policy, Markets and Finance team.
This is a 2 year term contract

The Policy Specialist plays a key role in programs at the international, country, and sub-national level to affect public and/or corporate policy to further The Nature Conservancy’s mission.  S/he serves as liaison and informational contact between the organization   and country, sub-national, local agencies, multilateral institutions, business and/or private groups.

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

•    May supervise administrative staff and/or volunteers, interns, or temporary staff. 
•    Financial responsibility to complete projects appropriately and assist with budget development and project management.
•    Ensures program compliance with internal policies and external requirements.
•    Works within scope of program’s strategic goals.
•    Applies specialist knowledge in evaluating existing policies.
•    Provides strategic support to establish a long-lasting, fair, and fruitful partnership with our strategic partners including government and private sector. 
•    Provides research and policy analysis in support of legislative, corporate and/or policy priorities.
•    Aids with preparation of program materials including presentations, memos, and other communications.
•    Influences the outcome of policy and/or corporate initiatives at the international, country, sub-national, and local levels.
•    Develops strategic partnerships with relevant agencies, conservation organizations, and/or industry.
•    Contributes to the development and delivery of external annual impact reports in collaboration with government counterparts, Conservation Funds and TNC global teams.
•    Work independently, working with supervisor as needed.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

•    Bachelor’s degree and 3 years related experience in conservation, international relations, social science, political science, or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
•    Fluency in English and Spanish.
•    Experience researching information from divergent sources and compiling it into a cohesive report.
•    Experience with legislative, planning, policy, or corporate initiatives at two or more of the following levels: international, country, sub-national, or local.
•    Experience presenting to and communicating with government or corporate staff and/or program leadership.
•    Experience working with diverse partners/government agencies and/or the corporate sector.
•    Expereince in recommending new policies, amendments or agreements and prepare draft versions.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

•    Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural experience appreciated.  
•    Confidence and emotional intelligence.
•    Extensive experience in determining if policies align with objectives.
•    Experience, coursework, or other training in policy analysis and conservation.
•    Experience coordinating complex projects in a decentralized organization, working across teams, operating units, and functions to achieve optimal results.  
•    Experience building networks or organizational capacity, facilitating informational sessions, increasing internal knowledge and capacity, and identifying key stakeholders.  
•    Experience negotiating complex agreements and contracts.
•    Self-starting, independent worker who can thrive in a decentralized organization with minimal oversight.
